Description This is a remake of an old pencil drawing I did in the early 1980s.
East Flange Rock was a landmark that the emigrants traveling over the mountains in covered wagons, looked for. While I was backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, I had found places where the wagon tires wore their tracks through the granite. This is a beautiful place too. That day, I woke up with frost on my sleeping bag, and then I hiked up to this place to sketch this picture. Note to self: NEVER go backpacking with non artists! Even though I'm a quick pencil artist, some people can not stop to enjoy the view.
Dip pen and ink.

It is quite possible there is a painting of this "landmark" mountain. Many of the wagon trains crossing the Sierras were looking for this place for safe crossing into California.
I miss going into the granite country.

Made me laugh. Was just talking to an artist in Florida who likes to draw & paint outdoors. She said she was very tired of people coming up behind her and asking whether she was an artist, and then telling her how their aunt used to be an artist, too.

I had that problem, when I was drawing or painting near crowds, or places where the crowds gathered. People would be curious to see what you are up to, and then strike up a conversation, all the while, you are trying to concentrate on what you are drawing or painting. For scenic art, I found it to be best to draw after sunrise, before the crowds gathered, to get the best artwork done.

This is so beautiful...I have never seen this place for real but you make look and sound wonderful. To see the coverwagon groves in the rock must have been awesome. What a landmark it is!

Thank you! This area has a rich history. I knew an old cowboy who used to take his cattle into this region, back in the 1920s. I can only imagine being in this area, with nobody to talk to for months, except "Johnny mule" and his cattle!
It is a beautiful area!

You are very welcome.
hum...nobody to talk to for months...just a mule and some cattle...right now that doesn't sound that bad.

I am sure it is gorgeous there.

Sketch hikes are allot of fun! Besides the challenge to rock climbing, really observing the surrounding is exciting experience!

Some non artist do learn! I have found I would rather be alone on an art hike than to hassle with having an impatient "buddy" along.
Wow! The Cistine chapel - Lucky you!

You did good, to have that friend learn to just stop and enjoy the sunset! The mindset of most people is to rush through a hike or fishing trip. I gave up on most non artists after that trip into the Emigrant wilderness. I did have one non artist, who enjoyed my art hikes. He is a Buddhist, and loved to stop and enjoy the beauty of the Sierras. Not many people around like him.

Yes, it was allot of fun and spiritual. He would bring his bamboo root flute. So, while I sketched, he would find a place nearby to play his music.

It does have that appearance. Trust me, there is allot of lines. The old nib pens would not allow me to draw a continuous line. You can see the many lines, more clearly in the download mode.

"What are we DOING here, Richard? It's as cold as f***! Why do you have to sketch that? Couldn't you have just taken a picture?"
I can only imagine...

Zage56 In reply to westbrook61 [2009-10-18 06:26:29 +0000 UTC]

Yep! They knew I wanted to sketch, before the trip was even planned. I consider my self to be a fast sketch artist, so, whenever we stopped, I quickly took out my drawing pad and tried to make due with short stops. That one statement was said: "Couldn't you have just taken a picture?",and he ruined a good friendship. After that trip, I always sought out other artists, whenever I planned to do art and hike . It is usually a peaceful and fun experience!
