I love the use of pointillism in this piece for shading. I've never really thought about trying that before due to my ink mediums, but I might try that just once. Also, you did some clever touches with the perspective.

Thank you, Ariel!
This was a fun pic to create. Pointillism can be allot of fun to experiment with. Experimenting is a big recommendation. I found it sometimes looks better than hatching. If you go through the pen and ink group, you can see other versions of pointillism. What sort of ink mediums do you have?

You're welcome. As for what I use, I sometimes use my nib pens for sketches, while in my more finished work, I use different colored ballpoints for shading and lining. Other than that, the reason pointillism wouldn't work with my purple and blue combination shading is that when I hatch my shades, it blends. Though, who knows, I might give it a try.

What sort of pen nibs do you have? How often do you use pen and ink? There are allot of really nice pen nibs that work great for hatching, and others that terrific for pointillism. I'm curious what pens you might have.

Let's see, I've got a calligraphy nib, some that have a layered element for holding the ink, a lot of rechargable nibs... I might have to post a picture of my nibs in my scraps just for you, since I have several, but I've only practice with them.

Cool. Let me know when you post the pic of the nibs. Last December, I gave various pen nibs to people I knew who would use them (sort of like a secret Santa). I knew you did allot of traditional art, but I was not aware that you used dip nib pens.
I posted some dip nib pen studies with images of the nibs, in my scraps, to give you an idea of the various nibs I have.

I'll probably use my Nintendo DS and capture them since my professional camera was stolen. As well, I'll use a sketchbook to write on for the nibs.

In fact, I don't use them often unless I want to experiment with them. So sure, I'll post a picture.

Whoa!
Okay. I have to ask! What perspective did you draw this in? (the structure?) I say 1 point...but I am not sure!! This drawing is jaw dropping awesome! Damn! I am jealous! I love this Richard, I am all excited! LOL! That figure leaning-how cool! I will shut up now from tarp

I figured you might be the one artist who would have noticed that distorted perspective . That sort of perspective has fascinated me. It is like trying to draw a 20 story building, from the roof of a 10 story building. Seeing the base of that building below you, and looking up to see the roof way above you. Try drawing that perspective!

tarpalsfan In reply to Zage56 [2011-10-04 19:02:45 +0000 UTC]

Distorted? I think it is pretty darn amazing. Still, you didn't tell me, is it a one or two point? It is a great scene. That could have ended up looking alot like an interior...but it didn't!

What your discribing...wouldn't that be a three point? I am not gonna try and draw it though! In David Chelseas book, thier is a drawing that shows figures on a roof, and the street far below-it is a two point.

Perpective is fascinating to me too. I have several books on perspective for artist.

I can't draw a decent perspective scene yet. I haven't practiced that much.

Great drawing! I love it from tarp

Distorted is one of the ways I describe this sort of perspective. I have done allot of interior drawings like this one. Exterior pics can be tricky to do.
Multi point perspective, I guess. The drawing is split in two, with two three point perspectives.
Your gallery has allot of perspective drawings and study's, that is why I thought you would find this pic interesting!
Keep working at your studies. Experimenting with your drawings does help - Like this drawing has for me!

tarpalsfan In reply to Zage56 [2011-10-04 20:52:49 +0000 UTC]

Uhm..a four or a five point then? One shows a split perspective-like your divided walls with tunnes-the other a sort of fish eye view...but I can't remember which without getting out some books.

The main drawing that I tried using perpective, an interior was Nudie Blue, I still couldn't get the figure to stand right. I drew a 2 point grid. That was a fail. But I did learn from it.

Your drawing is very interesting! I will study it again soon! from tarp

Zage56 In reply to tarpalsfan [2011-10-07 19:51:14 +0000 UTC]

Sorry about the confusion, Kath. The main structures are two point perspective. There are other items in this pic with their own perspectives. I have been working on several distorted perspective sketches. Many of these use the traditional one, two and three point perspectives, but I tweak them for the optical illusions we naturally see in nature. This has been a little project of mine.

I tried drawing a tunnel in 2pt. in my Dragon drawing. It isn't in the drawing because I couldn't figure the elipse out.
Yours are stellar!(tunnels)

The figures and other things in the drawing still stick to the centerline though, right?

Your drawing, I think it is great for the brain. I wish more drawings were! Great drawing Richard! from tarp
