Description The airship Roma. This is one of four photos from my grandfather's (Harry D. Treadway) photo collection. I will add more information later.
I have a large collection of photos from my grandfather, who was a pioneer aerial photographer in the 1920s through to 1947. I want to share these pictures with relatives and friends who might find them fascinating.

Great, great, great pictures, many thanks.

Roma, the largest semi-rigid ever built in the world. This was the first semi-rigid airship by C. Usuelli, E. Prassone, U. Nobile, and G. Crocco with a triangular keel, vertex downward-looking. Since then, same was used in all Nobile’s airships. The last was built in Soviet Union. Ill-fated, she crashed into the hillside in 1938, with death toll of 13 from 19 onboard.

A book about Roma was published recently: Sheppard, N. E. (2016). The Airship Roma Disaster in Hampton Roads. Arcadia Publishing Inc.

Great ships, great times, titanic people.

Dream to have a picture for my book about Soviet airships. Is there any chance?

Yes, you can use those Roma photos!
Please let me know if TIF format pictures would help your book.

Many thanks! TIFF would be certainly better for print.

How should I attribute the pictures? This is important to properly do this to respect the owner/contributor.

Let me know if this TIFF format is too big.

I really want to do a pencil drawing of this. I've got a box full of old WW2 photos my Oma gave me from Germany. These are so much fun to sketch as practice.

If you want to draw this, Evan, do it.
Those motors were most likely what caused the disaster of the Roma, back in the early 1920s.
You old WW2 photos can be inspiring to sketch! I would be curious to see the photos or your art!

I'm a historian for Hampton Roads, VA and for the past two years, I've been researching for a book that I intend to write about the Airship Roma and her crew. You said that your grandfather was an aerial photographer... do you know if he had any other images of Roma or any notes? Please email me at AirshipRoma@gmail.com... I look forward to hearing from you!

Very best,
Nancy E. Sheppard

Greetings Nancy!

What photos I have in my gallery is the extent of my photos of the Roma.
There were no notes with the collection of photos that were handed down through the family.
After I did some general research on the Roma, I noticed how few good photos there were of that airship. I figured a treasure like these should be shared with others.
Please let me know when you finish your book. I would be very interested in your research!

looking at thses ships . i sometimes wonder if there was a monopoly by other aircraft companies to kill thses majestic ships.

i still beleave people would want to fly in these ships. its the only way to fly like a bird , to use the winds by earth, and to navigate in the atmosphere.

to look at thses ships and wonder , did we go the oposite direction with super expensive planes etc.

i think we could have evolved thses ships .and flew the way it was meant to be.

At this time (1920s), I think many of the airship and aircraft companies were on equal standing. The Roma was an awful disaster, that concerned many about airships. The Hindenburg pretty much sealed the doom of the big airships.
I agree, I think there could be a revival of this technology. I have seen some new designs with helium airships.
A airship flight would be awesome. The accounts of people who flew the Zeppelins in the 1920s and 1930s are fantastic. Those airships could have evolved into something wonderful IF the disasters did not ruin the early industry.
The designer of the Roma was a genius. I have read that his designs helped to inspire many modern semi rigid airship/ balloons of today.Β

Thanks! I think my grandfather lived and flew during an extraordinary time of aviation. Now that I have my gallery folders figured out, I should be posting more of HDT photos,
