Galathea class was designed and ordered before Lotus class, despite this Lotus class enter service first due been cheaper and easier to buil. Galathea was on the other hand rather expensive fast attack ship and it took two additional years before first ship was built.  Galathea was considered to be the most advanced Fast Attack Ship or missile ship in the world. Due fact that was armed to the teeth, very manuverable and carry very good radar systems, it was also one of most expensive ones. This was main reason that original order of fifteen ships was cut to only six. To compesate this cut, Bengalore Royal Navy order alternative, cheaper class - Lotus. While Lotus was still well armed, there was serious cuts in its designs, making it faster to built and cheaper to maintain.

Galathea itself was variant of new American Fearless class fast attack craft. Due all Bengalore shipyards been busy with building new ships and maintaining the existing ones, all six of the first batch were built in United States while the second batch was to be built on Bengalore shipyards. Many in BRN called Galathea mini Ganges in term of its capabilities.

Second batch was not even planned due ship been more expensive then Lotus or previous Shailendra. However with rising tensions between Bengalore and India, BRN invest heavily in modernization of its forces and increasing the numbers of ships and submarines in service.

Second batch was increased from six to eight totaling fourteen ships in all. Ships of second batch were to replace remaining Shailendra ships.
