Description Hey guys! After some deliberation, I've decided it's time I got serious and really focused on improving my technique as an artist in areas such as anatomy, gesture, etc. I've begin to do daily gesture drawing practices. The ones featured in this deviation are a combination of 30 second, 5 minute and 11 minute poses. I welcome critiques on how I'm doing these gesture drawings. Please tell me if there are any super glaring mistakes in my proportions, gestures, etc.

I would like to preface this one by apologizing if my critiques seem a little lacking, you wrote out quite a thought out and well worded one for me and perhaps mine have been a little too small. The problem is unlike the critique setting this doesn't have any minimum word limit, so I will try and do a more well worded one for this piece.

I am further impressed by your anatomical mastery, and the combat poses are particularly inspiring. You seem to have a dab hand at it all which is a feat within itself and the hands and feet are often where some people can lose it but you've done them magnificently. I admit I am impressed by all the pieces you brought to my attention, thank you and thank you for critiquing my work.

Please don't apologize! I wrote you one critique and you wrote three for me, I think that's already more than enough! Thanks so much for the lovely comments I feel that I still have lots of room for improvement though! You're most welcome

Really nice work! You've done an excellent job capturing the movement in each figure. I'm most impressed with the one in the bottom left corner. :]

Thank you! I'm glad to hear that I managed the capture their movement, that's always my aim when I try my hand at gesture drawings

These are really good, to be honest. I would like to give a critique but I don't know what to critique on. One thing that I presume is intentional is that these are a bit cartoonish representations of a humans? I would love to see some so-called finished products from these.

Haha thanks for the compliment haha Yup I intentionally drew them less realistically, partly cause it's sort of my style, and partly cause I haven't learnt much about anatomy yet I don't really think I'll be making finished products from these poses though as they're just meant as quick gesture studies, but who knows, maybe in my next practice I'll pick a pose and develop further on it.

Very expressive poses. I don't see a lot to gripe about given that these are sketches. For what they are, I'd say you have sketching down. Are any of these more complete?

zara-godforsaken In reply to vanderWaardart [2015-07-02 03:16:19 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Nope, I did not make any of these more complete, this was just meant for a really quick gesture drawing practice, although if I were being honest some of these took a little longer than the supposed time limit I have not done a "complete" drawing in a while, sadly.

I like the gestures you drew. And overall I think the proportions are allright. There are only two figures which look a bit odd to me. The first is the lady on the bottom left. She's leaning so far to the left it seems she might fall over. Maybe you could move one of her feet, below her center of gravity (which is somewhere near the hips), so that she seems more balanced. The other thing is the guy standing to the left of the woman that's kicking. His proportions look a bit off. Although I'm not exactly sure why I think his head may be slightly too small or his hips are slightly too wide.
Other than that, great drawings!

Thanks for your critique! Yes, now that I look at it the bottom left figure does seem a little unbalanced. That actually was a gesture I made up, not done from reference haha. I should try to improve more on that. Oh, that isn't a guy, the reference was actually a woman. I tend to draw bigger proportions as I go along, so the head always ends up too small for the body, so thank you for pointing that out!

No problem! Ah, it looks good for a drawing made without a reference. I always try to use as much references as possible. I actually think I might be lost without them.

I used to draw without reference unless I really needed one, but now I think I draw much better with references than without! Β

I also used to draw without. Just because I was too lazy to go and find a good reference and because I somehow thought that drawing without a reference made me a better artist. xD Luckily now Β I know that using references makes my art much better.

I think a lot of people start out thinking that. But luckily it's never too late to learn.

Ok first of all, you are way stronger than me at gestures. Β But that really doesnt matter when it comes to a crit. Β I like your poses but i did notice something when gesture drawing (i got this from a guide) they usually dont always draw out the whole anatomy and anatomy isn't really a concern most of the time. Β I'm not saying to ignore it im just saying they try to minimize pencil strokes and capture the gesture using S curves instead. Β I hope that was helpul? Β THey say that if you build anatomy at the same time or before the jesture you really limit what the gesture can do. Β It creates pictures taht don't pop. Β  From the look of how you practice though im certain you went to art school and know this already.

zara-godforsaken In reply to PMMurphy [2015-06-29 16:49:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes of course, even if you feel like I'm stronger in gestures, you may certainly still point out my mistakes and give crits! And yeah you are absolutely right that gesture drawings should capture the pose using minimal pencil strokes and use S curves. When I look at the pros do it, that's how they are. It's something I'm working on, as I still struggle with doing these, especially 30 second gestures. Btw I did not go to art school, but I have been watching videos online on how to do gestures and practicing almost daily so it has helped me tremendously.

Just remember that you build anatomy ontop of the jesture and you shouldn't worry if they dont look anatomically correct when doing gestures .

I really admire what you're doing. This is the best damn practice you can do, it gives you a great boost in your skills. Have you seen the posemaniacs.com? They have this really nice pose generator with a timer! Very convenient!

Keep up the good work!
