I didn't have time to play HL2 yet, but I think I've read that the can actually does damage and if you throw it enough times, you can kill the guard. I'll need to check it once I get the game.

Better late than never, sadly (or luckily in your case?) I dont think they've even finished up all the story to Half-Life2 yet and its still kind of cliff hanging so by the time you get all caught up they'll release the last episodes I hope. (if they haven't already? not checked in awhile!)
