You don't need to be exactly sentient to be in love. There's been a few times in my life when I could've have an happy ending if my brain hadn't gotten in the way.

I believe this is suppose to be a "Before" Comic. There are a few different timelines she uses including "Survival" and "Infected" she also has "Post infected" which I think your mixing it up since I don't think she has "Post Z. apocalyptic" just yet.
Hunter is just very much like that. Trying to be slick but not much so.

The timeline here appears to be the 'colored timeline' which seems to be the primary story.
If I was writing this thing, and I'm not trying to be a backseat driver, Hunter and Smoker become intimate after watching a very scary news story about the first outbreak of the Green Flu.

Pre-Infected timeline is the gist of what's going on here, and Zarla has already written and drawn a bunch of intimacy between them prior to the outbreak, and a comic about what happens after Smoker hears the news about the Green Flu, then Hunter shows up at her apartment, having gotten bit.
Their relationship spans quite a long time before the Green Flu is ever brought up. Zarla's written fics for this, too.
