"I tried but she didn't pick up!"
"Well try again." She took her phone from her pocket and dialed her mother's number. The child on the backseat was humming to whatever was currently playing on the radio.

"There's no reception here," she said. "We're almost there anyway."

The song was interrupted right in the middle of a catchy chorus and replaced with static.

"Daaaad!" the little girl exclaimed. "That was my favourite!"

"Sorry honey, it always acts up around here." "I can put in one of your CD's if you want."

"Yeah, okay."

Girl's mother took out a box with CD's from the glove compartment, chose the one she knew her daughter to enjoy on long trips and put it in the CD player. The car was alive with music and humming again.

"Make a right here. It's slightly faster."

He made the turn and continued on a narrow road through the woods that surrounded the small town, which they were headed to. Their delay meant that they were now arriving at dark but not particularly late since the sun goes down fast in October.

The CD started to screech and wheeze, turning the song into something almost sinister. Then the noise stopped entirely.
"It's probably damaged, we had that one for a long time," said the father as he started to fumble with the radio.

Look out!" his wife shouted and he immediately slammed the brakes. The girl in the back produced a high-pitched scream.

"Everyone okay?" he looked at his daughter who was scared but otherwise okay. He looked at his wife who was staring straight ahead, shock in her eyes. He followed her gaze.

In front of them stood a small group of people - right there, in the middle of the road. But something was terribly wrong with them. Their heads were covered in something, but what it was he could not tell. He noticed it was also on their legs, arms, chests, even on the nearby trees. There was some of it on his windshield. He looked back at his wife but her face was replaced with the same thing. He screamed.
