His front legs are well drawn, very elegant. Horses are bitches to draw but you do quite a good job.

And I tried to do the same in GIMP, but it's just not possible to make a soft transition from "no blur" to "maximum blur"

You need to select the part you want to blur, copy and paste it and blur the copy. You can adjust it with the eraser. ^^
