hey, this is great! You've captured a wonderful aura that he has...that darkness in his soul.
I love the soft edges...did you use kneaded eraser to pull off some of the graphite? I would almost swear this was a charcoal from the texture

zednaked In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2010-12-22 01:43:12 +0000 UTC]

heyyyy thank yoou... its always a GREAT honor to know that you liked my work, it means alot ! Yeaa, i used kneaded,. Yesterday i saw graphite powder for sell, do you use it ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to zednaked [2010-12-22 02:27:16 +0000 UTC]

no, I've never used graphite powder. I've used charcoal powder though...you can wet it and make washes and other cool textures. I made the texture behind John Lennon by coating the board with acrylic (the mustard color)then spraying it with water and letting some of the color lift...

but I do love this drawing of yours!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zednaked In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2010-12-22 10:54:21 +0000 UTC]

why did you sprayed the board with acrylic ?
you know, whats the deal with the so called artboard? theyre not sold here in brazil :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to zednaked [2010-12-22 16:30:09 +0000 UTC]

I sprayed the board with water right after I put a coat of wet acrylic (with a brush) down, so I could get some different texture.

I don't really think you're missing much with artboard. They are basically like pre-primed hardboard (or masonite) panels. Some have canvas-type texture embedded in them. I've tried them, the surface is very slick and non-absorbant. I would only use one if I wanted to avoid coating a hardboard (dark in color) panel with gesso 3 times.
So- artboard is a product for lazy people willing to spend more $ not to do any prep work.

I use heavy illustration board because it's versatile for any medium I want and the surface is flat (good for detail)...and sometimes I use stretched linen or canvas. I never use those cheap canvas panels. It's just a matter of personal preference. One is not necessarily better than the other.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zednaked In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2010-12-22 18:45:20 +0000 UTC]

i always wanted to use streched linen, how is it ?
You know, i never prep my canvas ... i dont even know how to do it ...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to zednaked [2010-12-23 00:24:18 +0000 UTC]

I love linen, because it has a fine, slightly uneven weave. It's also more expensive than canvas.
I used to stretch my own canvases, but now that there are good sales on canvases (I prefer the wrap-around type these days, so the frame is optional) I don't strecth a canvas too often anymore.
but even the pre-primed stuff doesn't have enough primer on it for me, so I usually add a couple of coats of gesso, sanded smooth in-between coats. Depends on what kind of texture you want to paint on. For portraits, usually smoother/finer weave is better, so you can get more accurate details

If you don't prep your canvas, what do you use? pre-primed canvases?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zednaked In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2010-12-23 11:54:15 +0000 UTC]

yesss,i buy this pre-primed canvases. i dont have to tell that i dont know how to stretch canvases heheheh.... i found this "acrylic gesso" is this the gesso you apply on the canvas ? I suffer from lack of foundation

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to zednaked [2010-12-23 23:51:51 +0000 UTC]

Acrylic gesso is the most common these days.

Gesso is a chalk or plaster mixed with glue that makes a ground for painting, in traditional terms. Acrylic is also good and easy (and cheap) and acrylic flexes with the canvas, so that's important.

Oil-based lead white ground I used once (like famous painter Richard Schmid) don't do this unless you want to wait a very long time to start your painting. It took 6 months to dry enough to sand, and sanding was total misery. And of course lead is toxic, and also expensive. Never again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zednaked In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2010-12-24 01:03:21 +0000 UTC]

i wanna see the painting you did on this lead white ground hehehe, i wont even try it.... how many acrylic gesso layers should i put on before i start painting ? should i ground it even when it is pre-primed ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to zednaked [2010-12-24 05:37:48 +0000 UTC]

This was the one: [link]

If you're buying white stretched canvases chances are they're already primed. If you're happy with the texture you're working on, why bother?
I only do it because I want a smoother surface, not for any other reason. I mean, who wants to do more prep work instead of painting??
It's very easy to sand acrylic gesso, though, and very tough sanding the oil-based lead ground. I never sanded that one (above) down properly, my arm felt like it was going to fall off after an hour of sanding (it's a 24" x 36" canvas)

I was happy with the painting, but I don't think that the ground made a difference, quite honestly.

omg, that artwork is amazing ! i like the raw texture of the pre-primed canvas, i guess ill stick to it ...

you should- if it works for you, why change?

you do video tutorials as you paint, don't you? I've been thinking about doing that, I get requests for it all the time....
what do you use to record and edit?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zednaked In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2010-12-26 12:55:03 +0000 UTC]

well, if you have windows 7 on you machine you may have windows movie maker installed, it is easy to use and works fine for this kinda video. Ive been using twitcam to broadcast my painting process. It is pretty cool. Last time i did, pep were making questions and everything. and after you finish it, pep may still watch the whole video and see the questions and answers.
if you do it, ill be the first to be there !

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cynthia-Blair In reply to zednaked [2010-12-26 17:17:45 +0000 UTC]

sadly, I have Win XP pro...But I am having a new computer built with Win 7 on it. I need more RAM in a big way.
Were you filming for hours?? Doing a complete painting? For me, I'd be at it for 5-6 hours, it would get terribly boring. I'd have to speed it up, or just show sections - with the audio put in after (or it would sound really funny )and I'd like to be able to put it on YouTube, so maybe only 15 min tops - as in a speedpaint.

so you were streaming it then? do you have a link for it? I'd love to see the process and how you paint.

zednaked In reply to Cynthia-Blair [2010-12-26 18:14:54 +0000 UTC]

i guess i found something that you might find interesting for your tutorials: [link] .
I did 3 broadcastings using twitcam. the last one was very productive, i did for this [link] piece. I showed my gear, some of my studio, answered some questions and showed the whole process, from the sketching til the painting. These 3 times wuznt schedulled nor nothing, i just called everybody here by using the journal and also on my twitter and who saw the shout got in. Next time i will schedule it, and post the time ill start workin 'cause some pep complained that it was kinda unexpected and they missed the action. Unfortunately this time i didnt save the videos, i guess i pressed the wrong button and i lost it. Next time ill be more careful. My twitcam channel is: [link] . If you wanna do some tests just tell me, cause im at your service

That's a beautiful painting you did - was it of your brother? I see a resemblance but the man you painted is much older wonderful for just 2 hours...he must have been thrilled to get it

Jaycut looks good for editing, I need to get my old camcorder working...it seems to have issues after I lent it out about a year ago. I lost the manual so I'm downloading it now.

I doubt I'd want to do it completely live, it would get dreadfully boring. I'd rather film it, edit it down to some remotely interesting 15 min. that shows the main things people want to see, and do a voice over track to explain the process. That way I can keep them as promos, too

I sent a request to your Twitter, so the next time you do one I can check in and see how you go about it.
Thanks for your help on this!!
