Gallery | Journal | Note me

Assalamo alaykum and hello all my friends. I hope you are all doing great. Enjoying awesome health and weather. And I am sorry for being so inactive, life is too busy these days.

I saw many friends talking about dA on recent 'incident' and I saw many people closing their groups or even thinking of getting rid of dA all together. So I thought may be I should also add my two cents in case someone would be interested in it.

Being a software engineer what I have come to conclude is that dA owners are having severe problems in running this site. We are seeing more and more server related issues this year and they are only getting worse. They had to decrease the number of requests (http post/get...) per day to keep in their server budget and do whatever it takes to get more money so they can keep running this site.

Core was what they first thought might help them in buying more resources in AWS ('Amazon web services' which provides the server, storage, cloud and all other online stuff) but this worked in exactly opposite way (people lost their minds).

What really bothers me is that the premium model has totally crashed, no more incentive for being a premium (core) member or running a Super group while dA focuses on adding more features (mobile support comes to mind more than anything else) to lure more people to join rather than fixing existing issues which made dA so popular in the first place.

So, no matter how much people write to dA, they will never tell people what's really going on and so it is pretty useless to complain to them..

To conclude, I am not saying that people donate all their money so dA can run, nor I am saying to leave dA. I just think it would be better if people just wait it out and see how and where dA wants to take its business. It is not like fb which has such a big rewarding ad based revenue. Let's see what happens.

Take care,
Zee

I have waited for a month to reply on this journal again. I think the servers are getting better (no doubt the load has decreased due to lack of usage) but I cannot see the attitude of dA changing. Maybe they are thinking people are just gonna forget it and start using the way dA is right now. Other than that, I can now access dA without continuously seeing server errors.
Also, cannot say for sure if hackers were behind it at all since now the site is getting faster just because the submissions and requests are not like they used to be.
I can't say about politics because I really hate that stuff. dA must keep itself true to art, not politics...

"True to art, not politics"

These are my sentiments as well, although I do take part in the politics forum I could do quite well without it!

ZeeShiKing In reply to OffBeatReBoot [2016-10-11 16:01:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is just because of lack of money or dA admins are finding how to distribute all the money they get from 'core' members.
Seriously, there is not much we can do, there were so many core members who left because dA was unable to communicate well about its financial issues with its community. Let's hope dA can catch up now and get its internal issues sorted out and they come out and talk directly to the community.

They have also limited the amount of images that show up when you go to 'add media' on a comment - if you go to DeviantArt, no matter which folder you choose, only 32 of the most recent will show.

They seemed to have reversed the change with 32 images showing, the whole folder will now show when you want to add media to a comment. I doubt they are going to reverse the changes to groups though and the momentum against the change seems to have died off so, I agree, DA won't change it's attitude.

UszatyArbuz [2016-09-08 06:35:57 +0000 UTC]

I actually haven't seen people who said that will leave dA after this "update" , yet I experienced by myself the consequences, really bad and obstructing the work of an admin: we at PixelChallenges have a policy, when we make a challenge journal with Inspiration artworks, we request all those mentions artworks to group's gallery. Yet I could only request 1/3 of them, then i had to switch accounts to request them from our Donation accounts, and then I had to leave out some of them anyway. I just don't have time to go back and forth everyday to do so, not including the fact that I usually request a cool pixel art piece to this group's gallery when I see one randomly, which I can't do now because I "spent my requests" on usual group's work.

I do remember that I saw somewhere that it's a bug actually - sorry I don't remember the source - so hopefully everything will go back to "normal".

By the way, the update messed up completely all the privileges we have set for the members, admins and folders, and this took us quite a bit of nerves and were confusing to our members as well (and the smooth work between our folders and members is most important at this group, since that's why they join the challenge).

ZeeShiKing In reply to UszatyArbuz [2016-09-08 23:25:52 +0000 UTC]

I agree 100% Ola and I have also heard about this bug, I am thinking this 10 works limit is to track that bug but what I am really afraid is that dA cannot afford the servers needed to run this site at full speed either. Let's hope things are fixed soon and we can enjoy dA like we like to.

UszatyArbuz In reply to ZeeShiKing [2016-09-09 06:58:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I think it's the most important problem, there was a really popular Polish site like dA, but they had so tiny servers and all that jazz so they allowed only ONE art submission at a day, of maximum size of 500 KB and only JPG. That was so bizarre I left it as soon as possible
So I really hope they won't get this awesome idea of limit of gallery submissions even for non core members, casue I don't really know what could be worse. Creating group gallery is just "copying the addresses" of existing deviations (I assume), so I guess it doesn't use that much of the space anyway...?

I guess so. I don' think hackers were behind this, just people who cannot administrate properly.

Lately I am not able to submit a print to my artwork (the Hydrangeas one) and I've tried different browsers with no success.. I'm getting a fever when I think I need to contact "Help" Desk...

Sure, it was digart.pl I think . They made a "new digart" site around a year ago, so I'm not sure if the old one is still reachable. I'm not sure about the limits of the new site as well, I've checked it only once and it looked like it has a new, fancy layout and that's it ;D

Hi Zee.

I see the 'comments' below.  I for one cannot keep my Group:JennyStokes-Fav's open with 10 requests a day.

My first and foremost thought is for d/a to: Close down all old/defunct Groups THEN set a Global submission/request Rule IF they need one!

As you know, after 3/4 weeks PhotoSeries is still not closed!

ALL Groups are NOT the same....so one Rule cannot fit all?
A lot of members on d/a are 'like sheep' NEVER go to comments section and help fight?
All you are doing by waiting is accepting.

Jenny

Hi Jenny.

I agree with your points but what I am saying is that dA cannot afford to have all of its functions working like they did. They are having severe server issues which they are unable to sort out. I am saying to wait because I am hopeful they can find a way to get this site running in full speed and with all the functions and features which we like in dA.

What's worse is reading these comments....I guess my head was under water for a good minute, now I'm kinda wondering why hackers seemed to be getting in more and more

Cannot say for sure if hackers were behind it at all since now the site is getting faster just because the submissions and requests are not like they used to be.
