Description It was a little bit trickier to color this than I had originally anticipated. Still, I rather like the result. Plus, it's rather a change for me, choosing a color other than blue or green. XD I would have liked this dragon turning out darker, though... There's just something odd about a dragon with salmon-colored scales. o.O

Not much to say about this. The coloring was really an afterthought, seeing as the real intent behind this drawing was shading and anatomy practice.

I tried to do a real background, but I failed at grass, so I laid down a bit of noise and added a motion blue. Cheap grass, but this sort of thing is really becoming my style.

Comments and critiques always welcome!

Time: roughly 5 hours (color only).

It's a grea coloring, but the background really looks a little bit weird/unfinished.
Maybe you could start with stones instead of grass.. Grass is much more difficult to draw, even I try to avoid it as much as possible.
When you look at my older works (and also my recent ones), about 80% have stones as a background.
I can recommend this tutorial here for the stones, btw: [link]

Thanks, I'm glad the coloring looks alright. Yeah, I was worried about the background a little... Maybe one of these days I'll actually learn how to draw my own background instead of letting the computer do some random noise and call it good. This probably would have looked better if the grass was covering a little of the dragon's body. Right now it looks like he's floating...

I didn't think about drawing stone... I have that tutorial (and a few others by her ). I used it to draw scales on my last drawing. I haven't used it for anything else yet, though. XD I think the tricky thing in this drawing was the angle - it's harder to draw stones (or grass) when you're looking down at it.

Well, if some grass cover the dragon body a little bit, it would definitaly look better, but you would also need to add a shadow somewhere- except the sun is right above the dragon, but then all the other shadows wouldn't look right.

Hmm- Still I think stones are far more easy to draw than grass- even and especially in such an angle you used

Actually, I did try to do some shading on the grass... The sun is supposed to be coming from the bottom left corner, so I made the grass darker on the right side of the dragon. I guess it wasn't very obvious though.

I'm sure they would be a lot easier to actually draw. I really should practice drawing some stone or rocks sometime. I'm getting tired of having to cheat to do my backgrounds. XD

Hmmm.. Did you ever have seen a shadow like this in reality? I for my part not Shadows are mostly far more clear (depends on the light source) and they get darker the nearer it comes to the body- so you would have an silhouette of your dragon on the ground

You might even learn how to draw grass, while you draw stones

Okay, that's true. I guess the whole background is fairly lousy anyways, so why not have a weird "shadow" behind the dragon? I guess it's obvious that I didn't pay attention to this when I did the "grass". XD

Maybe. Stone tends to have little blades of grass growing up in it.

Well, yeah, but you might can do it better next time!

Yep, but I rarely even draw this grass blades between the stones

great job on the coloring! I kinda like this color, maybe because it looks so odd

the grass could have been more static than this, because it looks like it's moving all to one side.
but overall: really good job! go on like this ^^

Thanks... To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what color it is. It seemed like such a great idea to lay down the shading first and then just place a layer of color underneath it all, but that wasn't working, so I actually had to put the color on top of the shading instead. You can see it better, but the shading just makes it look dirty. o.O I don't think I'm going to color like this ever again.

Yeah, I know what you mean. He looks more like he's floating than anything else. XD

ah, oh well. with every thing you do, you learn. this was a good learning process
I still think the shading looks great.

Zeimyth In reply to Zwartice [2010-01-13 16:46:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's true. Though sometimes it feels like all of the learning is directed at stuff you shouldn't do again. XD

Good. I don't know that I'll re-use this method very much, but if the shading looks alright then I must at least have the principle down.

Zwartice In reply to Zeimyth [2010-01-13 17:07:22 +0000 UTC]

well, you gotta learn from something, why not the things you shouldn't do again then? it makes sense somehow

practice makes perfect. (most of the time) you should try some more drawings with this kind of shading ^^

Zeimyth In reply to Zwartice [2010-01-13 18:31:54 +0000 UTC]

Heh, sure, but it would be nicer to learn from what you should do more of rather than what you should avoid doing.

Yup, I know. XD I'm going to keep practicing my shading - but hopefully with a quicker an easier method from now on.

I think this has some good colouring actually, though the grass does make him look like he's moving

Hee, thanks! I'd say more like "interesting" coloring.

Yeah, I see that... He looks like he's floating through some green plasma or something. Maybe he's dreaming. I suppose it would have helped to have some grass covering him just a little...

Phlum In reply to Zeimyth [2010-01-13 15:56:30 +0000 UTC]

But if you focus on the dragon, you don't notice the grass - like I didn't until I read your comments

Heh, really? Maybe I should learn to hold my tongue then.

Very nice shading and general texture! Keep up the great work!

Zeimyth In reply to blackminorscales [2010-01-13 06:36:51 +0000 UTC]

Hee, thanks. Texture is easy when you use this method - it's impossible to make the drawing smooth no matter how you try. Sure is horribly slow though. XD
