I dont think it have anything to do with style really, I mean you don't draw sonic with his spikes as balls, or squaries, I think it's always importen to keep the main design of the caracter there, otherwise it's just something else, I mean you can ofc play with the miner details

Honestly I don't think that sad bunny face is known for it's square head. It's memorable for its sad little face (hence it being sad bunny face not head) but over all to pick at something like the shape of the head is a little overly picky.
