Description Original Image from

She asked me last night how to fix a picture she scanned from her sketchbook. You know how there will be that weird gradation when you scan the edge or if the picture isnt laying absolutely flat? Well this is one of the many ways of fixing it.

In her case: [link] the gradation is in a blueish tint, so the video shows how to get rid of the blue. But this will also work if you first draw with a blue pencil and go over it with black ink.

Let me know if you have any trouble!
Here are the steps:
1 : start with opening up the image
2 : go to the top menu bar "IMAGE" > "ADJUST" > "HUE/SATURATION"
3 : here you can adjust
the hue=color, saturation=how 'colorful', & lightness=value
4 : to get rid of the light blue from the scanner, first select "Cyan" and make it MAX lightness
5 : There is still some blue shade left, so do the same thing, but to the "blue".
6 : Now there is only a bit of grey left on the edge, so goto:
"IMAGE" > "ADJUST" > "LEVELS"
7 : Levels is where you can make the lights lighter, the darks darker, by dragging the shapes.
8 : test it out yourself to see what works for you!
9 : I turn visiblity on and off the layer to see how it compares to the original.
10: It looks like the lines need to be darker!
11: Click and drag the current layer down to that shape to make a duplicate layer.
12: Change the layer mode to "Multiply".
Making only the 'darks' visible.
13: MERGE DOWN the layer.
14: Check how it compairs to the original once more to see if it needs more editing.
15: (EXTRA) to turn into B&W:
"IMAGE" > "ADJUST" > "DESATURATE"
15 (cont.) this extra step makes sure the line art isnt "dark blue" or "dark red", etc.

im loving these......

this might actually inspire me to get my scanner to work again....
i havent bothered, because the scans always ended up so lacking in detail and messed up,
that it was easier to draw on the computer to begin with.... but as i dont have anything good
to draw on pc with, i just gave up >_<..... havent drawn for years... hopefully ill start again!

oh my goodness you are awesome!
umm, so what do you do if you don't see the sketch because it's too light?

There isn't much you can do if the scan was too light. try adjusting the settings when you are scanning the sketch!

its called "Camtasia Studio" and I'm using the trial version, but it have no restrictions. Really damn easy to use program, it lets you record and edit as well. Ive been trying a few of these screen capture programs and so far only this one works for my dual screen setup with cintiq.
