DLT was specific. He said "Good picture of Jushiro(It's the 13th company captain in the anime Bleach), Ichigo Bankai from Bleach, Asuna from Negima, Ryuk and L from Death Note, and Walter and Alucard from Hellsing, have them all in the banner around the wording 'The Monarch'".

Just a question, does AX hire their mascot artists? or do they do the mascot contest like many smaller conventions?
There was this discussion on the Sakura Con forums about this issue. I'm curious on how AX does their mascots.

they didn't do any hiring though, I can tell you that.

you know...if they get their mascot through a contest...that's really taking the BIG advantage on the mascot designer.
because the organization is suppose to make money with the mascot (merchandise, etc), and a good mascot design copyright is usually paid well.

yea Sakura Con is still doing the mascot contest (I was the artist for this past year 2008) but on the forums there were lots of people talking about how there's *hara-tan who won top 3 for the past 5 years and me for the past 3... and the head of publicity was getting irritated about the amount of criticism on how the contest was run that she mentioned that they could just hire an artist, so I was curious on how it works down in AX
Although the said fame of the Sakura Con mascot artist isn't all that big. I thought at the very least I would get a special badge or something but nope... I didn't really stood out as the mascot artist in the artist alley....

I was their graphics manager at first...I created those characters just to use as the program guide cover in 2005...but then they started using all those images too much, so they (and I) decided they should just buy the copyright to those characters...
aww...that's not very nice....= =!
they SHOULD give you some kind of compensation...!

I don't know what's really going on in that field, I just submitted and won, got a free table at the artist alley, and of course free pass to the convention.
However I did remember that last year's winner =Neolucky kinda got screwed over from a free table. I don't know what really went on in the management level...
Sakura Con is pretty big now, Since they did get ALI project for the musical guest... I believe that the head count is in the 10k range now... about doubles every year for the past 6...

if they change it from time to time..that doesn't sound like a "mascot" to me...(shoudn't a mascot be consistent?)

I don't know much about these conventions...I only know Anime Exp, Comic Con, and recently found out about Anime North...)

Sakura Con is held in Seattle in the spring, late march this year.
I don't recall them telling me to sign anything in regards to that but they did mention that all the mascot submissions, including the one that don't win becomes property of the convention.
There are other conventions in the west coast too. Kumoricon, which is a small-er anime convention held in the portland-vancouver area and Anime Evolution held in Vancouver BC

From what I saw with the mascot usage, it was put on their website, the made t-shirts, put it into the convention guide, onto the full convention badge, had those big cardboard cutouts of the mascot, and they "distributed" them to local video stores and the like. So there's this place called "Scarecrow Video" that they had this huge cardboard cutout of my mascot on their display window and stuff. It was really cool! It's basically a promotional thing

I would love to see my mascots being made into various promotional items and appear in store...
but nah...SPJA's marketing didn't do thing like that...^^

yea it was definately a inner "victory" feeling, the unsung victory. although I don't tell people about it. It's more interesting to let them find out in some other way instead.
I remember when I was in Kumoricon and hanging out with some people there, became good friends but they never found out, not until the convention was over. It was one of those "we were hanging out with someone like that during the convention and we didn't even know it?!" OMG WTF?!
I asked Scarecrow about it, and they said that they didn't own it and returned it to them, otherwise they would have given it to me. and I'm guessing that it's too late to ask the convention for the cardboard cutout...

yea I did but I wasn't the Kumoricon Mascot artist, so probably at the time it would have been another anime convention that they never went to.
But they did go to this years. it was nice seeing them again.
I'm pretty shy when it comes to meeting people too. I remember that my table partner and I had this contest to see how many numbers we can get from the opposite sex, none of us got a single one.... lol 
For the life size models, if I got my hands on one of them, I would take it home and store it in my mom's house. (college living has no room so I'll keep it in a more pernament place) lol

I found out about AX about 3 years ago...
and then I realized there are many more similar anime conventions...it's just that AX happens to be really close to me...XD

I discovered AX last year right before it happened, and it was too late for me to plan to go. Unfortunately, I can't go this year either... But, I remember noticing the art and really liking it. I decided to start trying to draw myself, and then joined DA. Awhile later I stumbled across you on DA from a different piece of art and that's when I realized all that amazing art was by you! Been watching you ever since ^_^
