Description In Hindu mythology, a "rākṣasa" (pronounced raak-shasa) is a type of supernatural being or demon. These beings are often depicted as malevolent and are known for their strength and ability to shape-shift. The term "rākṣasa" is derived from the Sanskrit word "rakṣ," which means "to protect" or "to guard," but in this context, it refers to beings who are often considered to be the opposite of protectors; they are seen as troublemakers, evildoers, and adversaries of gods and humans.

Rākṣasas are a common element in Hindu mythology and various Hindu epics, including the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, feature rākṣasas as antagonists. Some well-known rākṣasas from Hindu mythology include Ravana, the demon king who abducted Sita in the Ramayana, and Hiranyakashipu, a demon who plays a significant role in the story of Lord Vishnu's avatar Narasimha.

These beings are often depicted with grotesque and fearsome appearances, such as multiple heads or arms, sharp teeth, and sometimes, the ability to change their forms to deceive or harm others. Rākṣasas are generally associated with darkness, chaos, and malevolence in Hindu mythology.
