Description A sketch I did of Lady Xoc, the Maya Queen consort of Shield Jaguar of the city of Yaxchilan. My main reference was a carving (Lintel 24) of her husband and her in which he watches as she pulls a barbed rope through her tongue. She did this as a sacrificial ritual in order to worship the gods. Definitely not a pleasant notion, but I think it sort of symbolizes the deep respect these people had for life (thus life-giving blood) and their unusual ways of portraying beauty - such as through the various piercings, tattoos, etc. I don't know...I just am fascinated by these ancient people and especially this amazing woman. Hope I did her justice.

Yes you did- your work adds a new dimension to her image.
*also please note that the MAYA people are not addressed as Mayan, so to add to your comment the Maya Queen Lady Shark (Xoc or Xok) was very much a powerful woman, ruler of Yaxchilan in the Late Classic Period. She as well as many Maya rulers practised self-mutilation in which blood letting was a noble method of shedding blood to induce a state of trance as well as to place the blood on ritual paper along with copal for incense and then burned. The tattoo idea is not a factual interpretation of their body art practices, but large ear and nose spools were part of fashion- the movie "Apocalypto" did no justice and was wrong in their visuals multiple times within the film sadly. :{
The thorns were actually from the maguey plant, very sharp and thick piercing thorns. OUCH!

Thank you so much for your comment!
What wonderful information! I actually just enrolled in a class on Maya art and culture and just found out about the appropriate use of Maya vs. Mayan - but thank you for also clarifying! They truly are an amazing culture and I cannot wait to learn more about all their customs and values - so fascinating!
