Description FEATURED CHARACTER: Twhich, an anthro Phoenix

CHARACTER CREATOR:

PIC STATUS: Trade

MEDIUMS: Prismacolour pencils (character and foreground), black felt tip ink & black marker (ink shading and line art), Paintshop Pro 5 (background, light and rain effects)

-------------------------
“Black Hole Sun, won’t you come
and wash away the rain?
Black Hole Sun, won’t you come,
Won’t you come?” – Soundgarden.

As a disclaimer, I don’t even like the above song. (I don’t hate it though! ) The last time I heard it was when I was 9 years old. I don’t remember what it sounds like. But for some inane reason, I never forgot the title of the song when I first saw its video clip and for some even more inane reason, I never forgot the lyrics to the chorus either. WHAT THE HECK???? O____O;;; So then, somehow a song which I never liked and which I can hardly even remember was to inspire a pic ten years down the track. Go figure. *Shrugs and is curious about her mind’s priorities* __

Anyway, as mentioned above, this is ’s Phoenix character Twhich, appearing late but then again, I’m always late so what’s new… Some of you might be thinking that the foreground looks familiar, and you think correctly – when Matirx7 told me that a story she’s working on was inspired by my pic ‘Once around Yggdrasil’, I decided to revisit the idea and include Yggdrasil in this trade pic. The only difference is that I drew Yggdrasil with flowers this time, and if you look closely, there are stars in those flowers, but er… they didn’t come out very well. -__- Damn you Dodge tool, you let me down!

The Black Hole Sun was a weird idea, which is why it turned out looking… well, weird – the way I put it in the pic isn’t supposed to be realistic (and what does a Black Hole Sun look like anyway?), which is why it looks like it’s 2D in form by the way the clouds appear at the front and back of it. There isn’t any light source coming from it by the way, so er, just call it a big flat shadow which looks suspiciously like a spider, but that’s to be expected due to all the spider outbreaks happening in my house lately! *Squashes the eight legged sun with a broom* In part, it was also inspired by the info that Matirx7 told me about Twhich, who has the ability to control black fire. My interpretation was a bit way out and quite frankly I don’t know if Twhich could (or would) control something like a Black Hole Sun, but you’re welcome to develop the idea if you want, Matirx7! ^__^;

This was also the first time I’ve ever tried a rain effect and I’m pleased with the way it turned out because I wasn’t expecting it to work. (Oh ye of little faith… XD) Making the lightning was fun too, so I’ve found other things to play around with apart from blinding shinies! Anyway, I want to try and make this description shorter than the ones I’ve written lately so I’d better sign out now… enjoy your pic , and thankyou again for the pic that you drew for me! A phoenix for a phoenix!

Thankyou verily for the compliment! As for how it was made, it was drawn out on paper, inked with felt tip (including all black shading), then the foreground was coloured with Prismacolour pencils before I scanned it and added the background/all other effects in Paintshop Pro 5. (A long winded approach I don't follow anymore lol... )

[first of all sorry I'm commenting so late X__x stupid school]

Very interesting pic, the overall look of it is very impressive Some very skilled CGing going on, as well as use of traditional media, and the amount of detail blows me away O_o Those feathers, especially Wonderful lighting effects, and again, the background is very well fitting and doesnt take the attention away from the character. Very well done~~

Ahh, I haven't heard that song in a while...it's not too bad I think this is your darkest picture to date!! It's still got those classic Zen shinies though I really like this concept (and that sun DOES look like a spider!! ) You're lightning is jawsome!!! I can never figure that stuff out right O_o After staring for a few moments I noticed that the feathers look like big raindrops! Kinda gives ya the impression that the rain is making him melt Did you sneak little butterflies into the tree? Or am I just losing it? :3 The rain does such a great job of portraying motion! I love how you can always make your characters fit snugly into the atmosphere you create

as always you're doing a great job. you did the rain very well, the sky is great.. and the stars in the flowers.. well, i would've said that it was the rain hitting the flowers.. hmm.. dunno if that's good or bad?
and the phoenix.. hmm.. i start believing that you are a phoenix.. always so detailed...
nice

You call it weird...but I don't think so. It's been a long time since I've commented on any of your work, so I guess I'll make this a good one. Like I said, you call it weird, but I don't think it is. The idea itself if you ask me, is a quite original one. I believe you did a beautiful job on it. Your style is excellent, and just as magnificent as ever. The colors, style, layout, design, it's all thrown together wickedly nice. I'm totally digging this peice. And your wings...dear god if you can draw wings...I don't think I've ever seen anyone put the amount of time, detail and just pure effort into wings as I can see in your wings. They are mad awesome. I really need to learn to do wings better. I love the look of them...they're slick, shiny, and just make you drool all over them. This picture is yummy ^_^. I can't believe I didn't add you to devwatch before, but your there now. Anywar, take care, and keep up your spectavular work. ^_^ Ja!

I looked at the picture, braced myself for impact, and then I realized "Hey, I can do this one." And do it I did. This picture doesn't suffer from what I'm going to call Zenitis. It's a little shiny, but there isn't a giant glare that screams "Your iris won't cope.... ever."

I honestly had a hard time trying to figure out what to look at first. The upper part of the picture feels kinda empty in comparison to the lower part, and the lower part starts to mesh together when you're first looking at it. I can appreciate the level of detail a lot better once I've picked one image apart from the other. You did a good job with the lightning effects, which I've noticed (both from trying to do it myself and from seeing the failed results of other people trying to do it for themselves) is quite difficult.

Also to your credit, I found myself leaning forward a lot while looking at this picture, sizing up the whole thing again and again, and each time I noticed something new in there. It's hard to include a level of detail that makes you keep noticing things in any type of art, and you manage to do it time and time again. Very nice job.

Beautiful once again Zen and I know that tree looked familar for some reason. Great work brings that into this picture form the other, and just by comparing the to I can see that your colouring style has developed a lot. *shares at the glory of your talents*
I'm glad to here that the black sun isn't one of those spiders squished on your drawing though. Considering how big you've said they are. Hope your not in any danger yet
Anyway, for the picture itself. I love the way you did the feathers on this one. The black with coloured highlights was an awsome idea. As always i love the lantern lights and star flowers but i really liked the addition of the light butterflies (yes i see them) they are such a cute addition and I think, add so much to the picture without being to direct. And the lightening effect and even the black hole sun work well with the piece. Amazing!
And I wouldn't start woring about being late now, you've become to much a pro at it Keep it up Zen and I hope to see more of you soon.

No. Not flat. Wonderful, and still shiny, but... I get a kinda sad-angry feeling? But there's a lot of detail. *it confuses muh simple mind, lol... *

O__O PHOENIX!!!!!!
Awesome job with the rain!! It reminds me of the Thunder Plains from FFX/FFX-2 ... Heh, my friends at school say I'm a little too obsessed with FF and I suppose they're right
That Black Hole Sun thing is really cool yet a bit creepy at the same time if you really saw it in real life
Wow... How long did this take you? It's probably take me an eternity to achieve something like this!
I'm also glad that you stuck in Yggdrasil in there. It looks really awesome with all the glowy stuff!

Isn't that funny how our strange minds work? But hey, you found a purpose for hearing that song oh so long ago! Take inspiration where you can find it, no matter how bizarre, right?

I like the effects and idea of this image very much!! Yes, the sun is a tad spider-esque but truthfully I don't think I would have thought of that if you didn't mention it. I really really like the rain, yes yes!! GREAT JOB Zen-sama! And the lightning... you must teach me how you made that!! I tried to make lightning a while back in a pic, and it didn't work out the best...

I like how the feathers are kinda like rain drop shapped too! The picture has a very wet feel to it that way! And HAIL to your glowing shinies!!!

It looks excellent, and it has a really cool concept (and then in the same pattern as almost all my comments... I turn to the not quite good parts, must be kinda annoying)

hrm... It's busy. Especially the forground. It isn't so much the rain (though that does not help), as it is the various plant life. They are trying to steal the show, but then you have about the same attention-getting-ness from your subject. Put together, the two are a little hard to separate, and each distracts from the other.

but anyway, good job!

Another great picture for a great song. The foreground is very nicely detailed, and has your signature shininess...very neat. The background is interesting...the 2-D look clashes a little with the foreground...but that's fairly well moderated by the rain...after all...just how much detail does anyone notice when it's raining...I must confess though...I'm not very fond of that sun either...but I have no idea how I'd draw a black hole sun myself. Another great piece overall. Keep up the good work.

The 2D-ness of the sky really adds a touch to it, so I wouldn't complain too much. It makes things feel a bit more bleak and surreal to me--hell, if the sun turned black and got huge suddenly, the clouds could turn into squash for all I care, it'd still be a scary happening. I don't know what a black hole sun would look like, but they say black holes originate from rare types of star collapses, so I guess that's how? Our sun's future is probably just a simple burn out into a white dwarf, though.

You're exceedingly good with branches, twigs, and vines--this image is on exception. Unfortunately, the phoenix looks rather "busy" and so it was hard for me to pick out their head, at first. Found it.

I don't think the stars came out too bad--the flowers could have standed to been shaded a bit more, and against the darkness I think the star-flowers and fruit would have had a more visible effect on the phoenix's lighting. There are a few spots where the lighting is good, though. Particularly the reddish fruit on the bottom and the yellowish one on the lower right. The light... ring... thing around the red one doesn't look very light, though.

Okay, I'm done picking on you for today! ^_^;
