if you enjoy criminal masterminds, deception, death, and the general darker side of things-- i'd say death note is a great manga to read. x) it's not too heavy, but can certainly provoke such thoughts.
(+ the soundtracks for the anime are great for thinking, or drawing~ c: β₯)

I'd definitely say watch the anime as opposed to reading the manga... but definitely watch anime with Japanese voice actors. They're much more appropriate and expressive.
