Description
When the moon's at its highest.
Under the weeping willow,
we will wait for you.
February/March Gathering 41 BC(2020)
Nimue was... Not okay. It had been months... Months and months and months of constant loss... Constant shadows and dark clouds over Lightning Empire. Over her. A moment's reprieve from the pain and despair that the recent months gave, was the trip to the gathering of empires. The cats she would meet would be faces new and old, the ones she knew being some of the few she trusted anymore.
Bags under her eyes, thoughts of her the events that had unfolded still imprinted into her mind no matter how hard she tried to blink them away. Each one a chip off her once stable and... Happy life.
Gwaine, Dagonet, and Evaine's departures... All varied and while Evaine was the only one confirmed alive... Nimue knew. She knew from the quiet way Vanille spoke to her, the sympathetic glances Serotina tossed her way. Gwaine and Dagonet were gone. Gone gone gone...
Marin, a new friend of her's, he... He was gentle... Kind. And had his life stripped away. Attacked by that hunter... He never stood a chance with a predator like that. Nimue still remembered the stone he had called pretty, still kept it close in her satchel no matter where she went...
Caden, her first friend, along with... With his mate, had departed from Lightning. It seems life there was... Too much, too dangerous. And Nimue couldn't blame them. It... It was hard enough on her too, she'd had the though multiple times. But because she still had... A few more important cats... She would stay. For Arty, Neri, Nocturne. But she was barely holding on.
Then... Neri. Her mentor, practically like an older sister to Nimue when her family had all disappeared, had vanished. There was concern, and justly so... Slate had been the one to find her in the fields, murdered. Nimue had froze, body cold in the winter air. Neri was gone. Gone like Gwaine, gone like Dagonet. Gone like Marin. The little lynx had gone catatonic, quiet.
She ate less, trained less. It was enough to force her to go on patrol, but everything was fuzzy. Like she was walking on the bottom of a lakebed, the world hazy and so very muddled. Arum-Lily had tried speaking to her once, but it seemed to just... Drift by the then apprentice.
The final crack in the foundation Nimue had, not even weeks later, was Arty, her one last saving grace in Lightning, had been captured as well as the Lightning Leader, Slate. The end of the year, reigning in the new year, had been a disaster. Nimue had had enough.
Distancing herself, the lynx strayed towards the edges of camp, kept to her den all day, stayed out all night. She would disappear days at a time with little notice to Aleeza and the new silver, Vale, a cat she would have called friend if the thought of losing him too didn't terrify her so much. But she couldn't risk it. She couldn't afford to make any more relationships in this accursed empire. It was an omen, she was... No good in Lightning.
So she wandered the territory. A dangerous thing given Neri's mysterious murder and the increase in captures. But she didn't care. Nimue needed space, needed to breathe. Let her wandering paws take her places one wouldn't imagine.
Early Spring consisted of this. Constantly leaving all day on patrols, coming back in the night or the next day completely, bringing in a kill to make it less... Pointless. What was she searching for? Nimue wasn't sure herself. But she needed to keep moving.
The Spring Gathering crept up on her fast, and it was March. It should have been obvious Aleeza and Vale would mention their losses, and the reminder of it only added more weight to her shoulders, an itch to her paws. Pleasantries and news was given and then the mingling was up.
Nimue wasn't even excited about her graduation, what point was there. Neri wasn't there to celebrate this monumental feat... She wasn't there to reprimand her for burying prey or getting stuck in holes...
But a sliver of grey and a quick glance of pumpkin orange eyes her way had Nim's eyes alighting gently with... Hope.
There was still someone, that last someone who wouldn't leave her... Who was a safety away from Lightning, nestled in the woods of Shadow. They had offered a kindness back then that was something the lynx would never forget.
Even with other cats conversing around them, the two felines on their way towards her were like a blessing, even if she didn't know the male. Nimue was sure she would collapse from the sheer overwhelming giddiness, relief, grief, and weariness of everything then as they called out to her, concerned, their companion equally so.
"Nimue?"
