Description Matsumoto-Jo or Crow Castle is one of Japans best flat land castles and one of only 12 original castles still standing. The part of the castle with the white base on the right side is the Tsukimi-yagura or moon-viewing room which was a later edition to the main keep is especially rare. The snowy mountains visible on the left side are home to the famous Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

Yea, I got lucky that the wind let me get that shot as the water was not clear enough to get a good reflection again.

Why Crow Castle? Is there a lot of crows living there?Β

Oh glad you asked, I am sorry that I did not put that explanation in the description. The black lacquer work on this castle is very unique and intentional to make the castle appear more ominous to lower the moral of attacking armies. The name Crow Castle comes from its black appearance. It should also be noted that the moon viewing room was a later addition in the early 1600s (post 1603) after the Tokugawa had solidified power, bringing a final end to the Sengoku period.
