Description So in 2002-2003, I worked as the concept artist of video game startup Damage Studios along with Tony Guntharp , Chris DiBona , and Greg Kucharo among other great folks. We worked on a MMOG called Rekonstruction and had developed some great cutting edge stuff, but only a fraction of what was produced content-wise was ever released as concept-art/renders to the public.

We developed a rather detailed and conceptually dense idea that incorporated a lot of elements (including a very ornate societal framework), which we figured would have made for a highly customizable world. And this is one of the concept illos from it. Since I had to work quickly, many of the character designs were literally referenced from poses in various fashion magazines, clothing catalogs and personal pictures of friends. If some of the poses repeat or seem oddly familar, that is probably why. Many of the drawings are, as you would imagine concept/storyoard art to be...a bit raw. This one was mostly done, I just added some more color and did some digital tweaking.

Oh where to begin. I think I initially wanted to name this fellow after some biblical reference (as I do for many things, since they have interesting names that do not sound impish...who the hell cares about a hero named Mark, Jimmy or Angelo). So this is a variation of Marduk or Modecai (depending on which linguistic source you choose to use), and with some creative spelling: Mordo'khai.

Another of the tribal fringe people, even they have to have a bureauacracy and a technocratic class to support it. Hence guys like Mordy here. Men who basically fight physicaly and politically to positions of influence, who then work to organize the many disparate little groups treading around various wates into trained assault troops for either plunder (ifyou like being an evil kind of fellow) or secure relations with some of the more outsider groups into security coalitions (for the RPG monkey in all of you that want to build Mad max style Arcologies of manufacture/production and economic wealth).

These guys were still supposed to be master hand to hand combattants, with a fighting style somewhere near crazed martial arts lunatic, and a junkyard dog's tenacity.

pencil, rapidopgraph, gouache, acrylic paint, some other junk + digital

*notes the blades at the ends of his hair* Hmmm... Does he use those too? That'd be awesome. I love his face, the paint on it is cool (I've always loved tribal-type face paint) and he looks like he's ready to take me on or something. The name Mordo'khai is awesome... I love the reference and the spelling of it. Overall, this is just an awesome picture. Oh, I love the trim on his coat, too.

your clothing design is, as always, inspirational - i love the priest-look you've given him, and your descriptions are always a great read, i agree on the names too
