This has a rather obscure historical/political theme, coupled with a rather obscure 90s movie.

I really like this as a mixed media, really draws me back to a little bar I one knew called the Empty Glass, Live music 7 days a week.

Wow. I love the feel the this... the use of different medias and I dunno the randomness to it. It makes me think of a wierd and druggy roadtip in the 70s.... (don't ask where that came from)...

I love this pic! Might have to buy the print!

Just come to have a look at your work as you suggested on my thread on music illustration... clicked on the breed link as i recognised the name, then i came face to face with the work from a friend of mine from art college - he's under goochtek, aka spor (which is what he's under in breed), look at the following link: [link] Small world, huh? Anyway, i'll continue to have a look through your gallery, thanks for the advice, Anna x

I love this. It's interesting that you've put it under 'abstract' when there are very obviously recognisable elements within? I love the use of the 'real' thing (The CD) reminds me of what they did in that type of cubism that I forget the name of...Er, where they put real things into the image, collage and stuff, to bring it back to reality. Or challenge reality. Or whatever.

I don't know. It kind of has a post-modern feel to it but... not. I don't know. I love your stuff because you're obviously aware of art history, music history etc but, like all the best artists, do your own thing anyway.

I think part of the reason your work is so popular is that there's a real feeling of CRAFT to it. People like that. I like that. You can look deeper into it but you can enjoy it on a purely aesthetic level too.

Er. I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm saying! Er... I'll just say that I've come to this piece several times and it really does something for me.

P.S. If you ever get the chance, read "Len Lye, a Biography by Roger Horrocks" ...his work is so different to yours' (he worked largely in film and kinetic sculpture) but there's something about it that somehow gets me in some ways that yours' does.

I think I've forgotten to sleep a lot lately.

It's overrated. Besides, a little sleep deprived deleria does wonders for the creative mind.

Your abstracts never fail to impress me.
This is no exception.

The way you tied in the blue throughout to link and dissolve the initial explosion is nice, and also the red sticker directly in the middle of mostly blue to keep things interesting.
Also the way you wrangle the blue with the line, but let some leak out, it gives a sense of space, and then gives it away at the same time.

Ooooh, that really works. There's sort of a tension between pure abstract and representation, I see the shape of a person, and the record looks like the planet, then it has the text in it, which shifts it into industrial stuff and junk. And the painting is just beautiful.

Really digging the texture and composition, nice colour choices as well...it reminds me of Dave McKean's Sandman covers, he does work with a similiar feel to this piece.

How much of this is digital if you don't mind me asking, its very hard to tell, especially on the record, you've done a real nice job with the textures.

Not entirely sure about the colours, not a fan of black, with the record fair enough, I just feel a dark colour like a deep red purple would work better. It would help balance composition on that side of the peice, for me I focus on the record because of the white and the fact that the blacks all mix together on that side. I just feel a little seperation could be needed between the record and rest of the piece, but only little seperation.

Well, he did. I am partial to his late 80s/early 90s period, when he did more constructions.

Depending on outlook not much or almost all of it The final work is actually 3 layers (2 base paint and 1 record) and they are assembled together and tweaked to form over the course of a few days.

In terms of color theory, I ignore it almost en toto I generally avoid purple/magenta/pinks with a passion, and truth be told, much of what I do is asymetrically balanced to my own eye using that warped sense of color) I was naturally drawn from thetextures in the upper left corner down to the record in a diagonal line, and that is what largely dictated the flow of the composition once I settled that line of motion).

Yeah, McKean's work before use of digital is pretty cool, that's my fav period of his work too. To be honest though I haven't seen much from him of late. Picture That Tick was the last thing I picked up of his.

I thought it was something like that, I work that way when I do screenprints, except i go one step further and bring it back into the traditional realm like so...[link]

That's cool man, the colour thing was just personal preference not really a crit, I actually really do like them as is, just offering up a suggestion. The composition is nicely done, you handled that well man!

ahh so you mean that this piece as it is doesnt actualy exist outside of cyberspace? That it is actualy three diffrent pieces combined? Is this true for all your pieces?

zeruch In reply to Whimsybatt [2004-12-30 07:42:06 +0000 UTC]

While the answer in full is probably quite convoluted, the short bit is "yes, all these works in whole or part constructed in RAM on a harddrive".

Whimsybatt In reply to zeruch [2004-12-30 21:22:30 +0000 UTC]

zeruch In reply to Whimsybatt [2004-12-31 22:29:15 +0000 UTC]

Sort of. The Portraits tend to be mostly laid out in one sheet of bristol and then torqued digitally in the last stages.
