Finest Hour - Card Number 89: Growing Influence

She continued the book where she left of, finishing the last part of the casting of the Silver Wind to make sure she had made no mistakes, before turning the page to see the list of possible reactions to a miscast. A whole full page. She then turned a few more pages to make sure the list did not continue. It did. Hopefully it would end before the book ran out of pages, there was not many left.

“Loss of hair? Better not mention around Rarity. Slight 3-day cough? Not a big deal. Temporary dementia? Well, it’s not like you can forget how to wake up. Permanent inversion of all color on hair and skin? Wonder how that would look…”

As she read on in the book, it became clear that using the Silver Wind had been extremely reckless, but a remedy to Fluttershy was nowhere to be seen. Then a vital clue appeared on the last page:

“Volume… one? Volume. ONE? I forgot the second part in Canterlot? But I had everything planned out, it should be here!”

Cursing her lack of preparation, she began to search her bags. As she searched through her bags for the fourth time, she heard the strange voice she had heard back when dealing with the skeletons.

“Your plan is as fragmented as your chances of success. Splintered, by powers you can not comprehend. Through your struggles, you seek to forge perfection, yet only create failure. Doomed to imperfection.”

It had grown from a low rasp into a more booming voice, and coming from seemingly nowhere. Following the whisper was a stream of strange words she did not understand. If they could be called words at all.

“Anypony there? Is it you again, Discord? Get out of my head!”

“Struggle in blindness, if you must. Your actions are of little consequences to our vast numbers. Our infinite strength.”

From the campfire she could hear Applejack speak to her.

“You okay, Twi? Talking to someone?”

“No, AJ… I’m just… tired. Or so I hope.”

Seeing that no book had arrived in a miracle, she prepared to strengthened the magical barrier around their camp. Something was out there, lurking. Whispering in her head. What did it mean? “All will be one”? “Imperfection”? Could it have anything to do with what the shards of Nightmare Moon? The shards returning to one. But why then split into shards in the first place? So many questions, so few answers. She heard some steps next to her, and as she turned her head, she saw that Starswirl had gotten up from the fire.

“You know, while speaking with yourself might bring the answers you want, it can never help you with anything new. Or are you hearing strange voices as well?”
