Finest Hour - Card Number 52: Old Ideas Made New

Twilight began to ruffle through her books and notes. A huge pile of books was placed on the altar, where the figurine use to stand, and she began to read.

Energy. Conservation of energy. Transfer of energy. Breaking basic laws of physics. Something had to work. They had to generate a huge amount of energy to power the portal, but how? What had they that could amass such power? They didn’t even have a way to return to Canterlot and find another solution.

She was interrupted by Applejack and Pinkie Pie walking into the room, having finished stopping the two beasts.

“Ghee, this room sure looks fancy, Twi. Anything we can do to help?”

Help… anything to help? How could they help, they had no magic. Transformation of energy. Idea!

Her thoughts flying almost faster than she could follow them, she grabbed a pen and began to run some basic calculations. How much energy, exactly, would be needed? She didn’t even notice the others around her, who, after having asked a few questions, gave up and let her do her work.

“I may have an idea.”

Twilight looked up from her books, and explained her findings.

“I have calculated the energy needed for this to work. We need above 1.21 gigawatts of magic energy. But any kind of energy can be converted into that, by the altar here. Rainbow, can you remember how much energy a Sonic Rainboom contains? After all these calculations, my memory on specific numbers is a little fuzzy.”

Rainbow Dash looked at her like it was the most obvious answer ever.

“Why, Twilight, you just said it. 1.21 gigawatts.”

“Perfect. Rainbow, you will power up the portal, then.”
