This is cool, though I don't understand the pirate thing as of late.
The fire and smoke seem to break the effect though. The girl looks painted, while the particles look 'hyper-real.'

Indeed. I was already late for the contest. Hopefully they atleast accepted it and maybe it might even get in honorable mentions. This definately isn't my professional kind of style though, I could name atleast a dozen things wrong with this picture, the smoke as you said being one of them, hahaha.
