I guess it's from the manga. Is it long, I'm thinking of reading it? By the way, the style still holds up! I feel like I'm getting to know Sasaki just by seeing him.

It's kinda long (104 chapters I think, ~30 pages each?) but totally worth it. It gets a little messy towards the end though; like, it's kinda difficult to understand what's going on.
Tokyo Ghoul:re on the other hand is pretty complicated from the beginning and there are just SO many things that we don't know about the main characters (we get to know them gradually) and the general situation (thanks to the time skip).Β

Also, keep in mind that it really is a tragedy. I thought the author was messing with us on the first chapter (by having Kaneki say that if his life was a novel it would be a tragedy) because after a few chapters it got pretty optimistic (making the humans realize that ghouls aren't exactly the monsters they think they are, they have real feelings just like normal people) but in the final chapters the situation gets almost unbearably hopeless. =.=
