I can't believe this wasn't put up in my gallery before now.As I recall there was a good reason for me not uploading it, but I am astonished that I spent so long working on this piece and nobody ever saw it. It's so old... it was drawn while I was in Middlesbrough, and I haven't lived there for five years!
Anyway, some oldschool Sonic fanart from me - one of those pieces where I went back to my roots, in a way. This pic has spent at least four years shut away from everyone so, finally, here it is.

Hard to believe that the kids of today wonβt ever think of Sonic in this way. Theyβll have their own nostalgia for, what, Sonic Adventure? Good work on integrating the traditional background. Shouldnβt there be a life TV on the top of that loop

Yeah, I found that with games in general. I'm studying games design with people who are about six to seven years younger than me, and quite a few of them consider PS1 and N64 games as 'oldschool gaming', because that's what they were introduced to - which is fair enough, but it does give you a bit of perspective as to how quickly things move on.
I still see the Playstation as the first of the 'new' console generations as it was the first one I remember at the time that regularly featured 3D games. Classic gaming in my personal experience is NES / Master System (I only managed to play Atari 2600 games much later).
Though admittedly, this progressive nostalgia grates with Sonic more than most, because in my opinion the franchise has been mediocre for such a long time and I really feel that younger players won't ever really experience Sonic as a gaming figurehead in the same way that Mario still is. The blue hedgehog is buried under too many pointless character additions and dramatically shifting canon in a disjointed series of games (Sonic and the Black Knight? Come on, really?) that just serve to prove that Sega's once cool mascot has decidedly had his day.
That's my opinion, and i'm definately way older than the current target audience, but a great game is a great game no matter how old you are when you play it - and this is not the experience I get when i've tried Sonic games from Sonic Adventure onwards, with the exception of the GBA titles.
As for the extra life.... he must have got it the first time he went through this zone. Hehehe.
