Description Purble is grumby.

Who upset it.

How dare u.

Though in all honesty it's a miracle I am actually making a little art. :'D Calculus 2 class is kicking me around. Luckily I had some spare time recently.

Next up is Ienuqah's reference, because Batty and several other people said so.

I've seen this character around lots of times and always been curious about a thing with her

specifically why her wrists/hands are so buff/blocky? :0 I'm guessing 'all the better to punch you with my dear' but I'm still curious

I'm honestly surprised that no one has inquired about that before. I agree that it's strange, but it does have an explanation.

You can read more about ol' Shardy, if you want. Here's Shardken's refsheet. The art is a little outdated, as it was made in 2014, but the bio is up to date. Shardken Reference

As for the hands ... as you might have noticed, Shardken doesn't have thumbs. This is actually because they fell off. The trauma of her childhood triggered a phenomenon referred to as the rogue gene; the body switches on this normally recessive gene to change the DNA sequence and warp the physique. It results in a very rare metamorphosis to accommodate for better combat capabilities... changing things such as height and muscle build to help ensure survival. Shardy here is usually depicted in the "in-between" stages. Her hands are currently rewriting their muscle structure to remove the incorporation of thumbs, and it's almost complete.

It sounds like a setback, but the two fingers left on each hand gain the mobility and versatility of thumbs themselves, in addition to becoming longer. IRL thumbs are VERY strong and are used in 80% of hand actions. In the show itself, the Tallest only have two fingers and can do things such as hold objects and even write things down with only one finger. That's what is happening to Shardken's hands.

I had no idea that rogue gene thing existed, that's really interesting.Β  :0 And neat little character touch to give her! Certainly not something you see in other OCs, or at least not explained so clearly and realistically. Very cool

Oh you

Thank you! My worldbuilding tends to get very complicated, very fast. And I'm slow to make the art about it all.

I have so many developed tidbits that I dunno what to do with all of it.

Zerna In reply to Zontar-Zon [2016-12-26 22:48:40 +0000 UTC]

good world building is often complex, so that is certainly okay

WELL little sketchdumps of said tidbits couldn't hurt. Or just a scrappy journal posted about various headcanons and facts, if nothing else so you have a good reference in mind for them.

I should probably make sketches... you know, fill the four unused sketchbooks on standby, lol. Plus the micron pens from christmas...

Β I don't have a scanner right now, but I'll travel to a library or something. Usually I use SAI for doodling ideas if I need something quick for that reason, but I am not a seasoned SAI user. I have a long way to go before I'm comfortable posting SAI stuff online, so I seek criticisms and tutorials from people I have on skype.

unused sketchbooks are such a beautiful sight though. They can be hard to draw in when they're REALLY beautifully made though, because then you feel like your art isn't good enough to be in them
that's fair--Sai seems tricky to use, but everyone I've talked to about it have all said Sai is great, especially for lineart and blending.

Zontar-Zon In reply to Zerna [2017-01-04 07:24:20 +0000 UTC]

It's usually the fault of my mother. She's thoroughly convinced that I go through sketchbooks like there's no tomorrow, so on holidays she buys some regardless of whether or not I need some. I can't complain too much though; she knows what I like. Spiral bound, 8x11, and usually goes for a fancy cover to boot.

SAI is fantastic. Except ... the lack of a text tool. >:C But apparently the SAI 2.0 in beta has a text tool, plus a bigger threshold for brush size and canvas size. I have a peep who downloaded it, and supposedly it still has a few bugs for the developers to work out. But in the meantime, I import the image into an online application like Pixlr to add text when everything else is done. Other than that, I have no complaints with SAI.

LOL well at least you're supplied for life. And they sure do inspire you to do more traditional work, if nothing else.

No text tool?? Huh, that's odd...seems so basic. BUT OKAY. I've also been hearing some good stuff about the program Clip Studio Paint?... It's only $50 but I haven't heard a LOT about it...Know anything about it/someone who uses it/has an opinion on it?

I love that woman to death, but sometimes she spends more money on me than necessary, LOL.

I honestly didn't know about that program until you mentioned it. I looked up its reviews, and it seems to be pretty solid. 4.5/5 for most sources, and its geared more toward cartoon images. People have described it as "manga studio 5 under a different name". I obviously don't know anyone who uses it, but tbh $50 for a program rated that highly is a steal.

I feel you on that. xD Makes you want to shower them in affection and offer to help them with stuff around the house

Ah! Well hey, there's a program you could check out too, maybe when MS Paint/Sai get boring and yeah $50 for a good art program is REALLY good. Sai seems to be taking the cake, as far as recommendations from people

I love my mom to death, lmao. That lady is so strong-willed. She works as a principal of a high school in South Carolina, and its amazing how much she deals with. Being a principal is practically a political office, not to mention parents who behave worse than their kids lol.

Speaking of art programs, I found out that I am about to get a student discount subscription to Adobe CC for resume building purposes. I'm a computer science major, and I aim to deploy a portfolio website and a personal website project online. I am particularly interested in Dreamweaver, and I learned to use After Effects during my animation class (not that it actually applies in this case). Problem is, I barely know much about Photoshop. While I have access, I should learn to use it. I learned bits and pieces in the media arts program, but nothing too advanced. Got any helpful links or tips?

Zerna In reply to Zontar-Zon [2017-01-11 23:04:30 +0000 UTC]

HAH okay yeah school principal, wow, what a job
HMMM student discount on subscription... that's a tough call to make. I'd say take advantage of the program/discount while it lasts, but I don't know if I'd advise KEEPING the subscription up if it wasn't discounted? I hear it can get sort of spendy over a series of months, plus it's just not a great feeling knowing they can take away your art program if you don't pay up every month.

But as to tips for Photoshop...Interesting brushes and various filter effects are your best friend, since that's what most other art programs seem to lack. You can make GREAT stuff with PS, especially sun and star and water effects. Here's some links to some GREAT brushes and tutorials that are pretty easy, for PS:

This is A GREAT ONE and the main one I use for water: Easy way to make water -3- by pandabaka

This is the main one I use for Space environments..VERY easy star-fields: Space Background Tutorial by Supremacia

AAND HECK here's just a folder of tutorials and brushes I've used/want to use/found helpful! zerna.deviantart.com/favourite…

Hope they help!

Oh I definitely don't plan on renewing if they decide to cancel my discount after I graduate. That is far too much money. At the same time, I'm estimated to be in school for another three semesters, so I will have plenty of time to work with it. Hopefully I will also have a better job that pays higher than minimum wage by then. Β  Β

And thank you very much for the tutorials . The space one will be especially useful, since I have little to no good materials for creating effective space backgrounds. I have yet to stock up on brushes; the custom ones that I DO have consist mostly of copies/settings I received as gifts from friends. I wonder if I can somehow transfer those brushes into SAI; I know SAI supports PSD files. Time to do research.

okay good, yeah, because...yeah those subs can be way too much |D BUUUUT three semesters with a discount should be plenty of time to figure the program out, definitely. And yes, hopefully. D;

and you're welcome! the space tutorial is super helpful indeed, since it takes like...20 seconds to make a simple starfield. Good luck with figuring out Sai-PS support too
