Well, it depends actually a lot on the mood of what comes out of the pen... after a few weeks of slump and nightmares the tones usually turn darker, but still even a few hours of sugar high may produce another Skeletor Pony.
However, one of my RL friends actually told me the same as you, not so long ago. Maybe I should turn more often on the surreal gear. Brings some diversity to the usual fanart, I suppose.
