Old comment is old, but I'm only now able to reach the bottom of the huge pile of these accumulated into my inbox, thanks to the new, handy page system. XD
My basic style is very angular, so curvy smooth lines are still a hardship despite a lot of practice. Let's just say that one of the biggest contributors is the smudge tool, with which I soften and reshape lines. A high-precision tablet helps also oodles. Get yourself a Wacom Intuos or Cintiq, and you'll soon notice the difference to those cheap 50β¬ pieces of junk best used as food trays. Since I bought a Wacom, I have stopped scanning hand-inked pieces almost entirely.
On a different topic, are you still up to doing that kiriban request? It's just that I haven't heard anything back for a while, and some of the reference links have changed since.

Hi!
Er, yes, I am still doing the kiriban. My current to-do list, which I'm proud to say has gone down from six, stands as:
- Doctor Who Commission
- Zorm Kiriban
- Finish It All Off Ficathon
Doctor Who is done except for colour and text, which should be fairly simple, and I sacrificed last weekend to the Cold Snap challenge, because if there's a thing I can't resist it's porn battles. My priorities are clearly whack.
(And then they extended the damn thing. I will probably end up doing a couple more things for it, just to cover all the fandoms I COULD write for, and then I need to stop myself before I end up trying to do all the pairings, too. I don't know if I'll be able.)
I have a cheap tablet, I'm afraid. I've worked with an expensive one as well, but as that was for work and it was editing work I never really got to sketch with it, besides a few doodles on Paint. I'd have to test it properly before deciding it's what I want, since it's a lot of money and I've proved myself useless on the cheap one. Gilly's talking about wanting to learn tablet-drawing as well. I don't know. It would save a lot of time, if I could get a hang of it.
BR,
H.

Your detail is always exquisite, I must say. Especially in the background, with the wood and the knots. Just wonderful. And I could see John Rhys-Davies' voice.

Isot resoluutiot ja tarkka Wacom. PienennΓ€n nΓ€itΓ€ jΓ€lkikΓ€teen aika reippaasti, jottei lataus veisi viittΓ€ tuntia. AlkuperΓ€iset tiedostot ovat aina jotain yli 3000 pikseliΓ€ yhteen suuntaan.

ΓΓ€h... no, my hands rarely hurt after drawing, it's my neck and shoulders. I actually hold the stylus very lightly on the tablet with a strong tilt and let my whole arm do the work with long sweeps. I guess due to this elementary difference in technique I've never understood why so many people say they get their wrists achy from writing and drawing.
And since I'm more or less ambidextrous, I let my left hand do all the 'secondary' operations (zoom, undos, cutting, mouse movements...) most artists do with their primary hand. It gets pretty much an equal share of the work.

Tassos13 In reply to zorm [2007-07-05 16:26:27 +0000 UTC]
XD That's because most people use their wrist rather than their arm to draw. The arm stays motionless while the fingers/wrist does all the work.
Ah no fair! DX You have a spare! XD

Wow, that's incredible! I love the knotwork on the wall! How you managed to make each one look identical, I'll never know. His armor, her clothes, the hair, the anatomy...just fantastic all around. *bow*

The knots: I drew one in a separate file, and then copypasted it around. XD An easy way to make continuous patterns for walls and panelings. On normal paper it would be more difficult; one'd need to make a cardboard template or something.
Thanks!

The reason it takes you so long to do lineart is because of your attention to detail. Some people have minimal lineart, but spend ages on every nuance of colour.
I do neither. I am fairly half-assed in both respects.
π: 0 β©: 1
zorm In reply to MishiDraws [2007-07-05 10:02:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I understand some artists have this difference in their works. I see quite a lot of trouble over coloring too (light sources, toning...), but generally that phase takes up to ten hours less time. Some say that minimal lineart is easier to post-process too, but I prefer having my details pinned down in the b/w phase.
