Description Descr.

Well after working a bit on space art, and checking out tutorials i decided to write a tutorial on how create a planet base myself!
To help you all with creating planets using this tutorial, i have put that texture in scraps, because i don't want to reveal my sources
Texture : [link]

Details

This tutorial is over 3mb at 100% quality, so i've reduced the quality to 50%
Tutorial writing time : about 2,5/3 hours
PSD size : just a mere 20mb

Terragen render for the final image:

Render time : about 30 mins at 1000x750
Later added the planet with the texture i used in the tutorial
(it was manipulated in many ways though, just how you guys should do it )

Comments and 's are always appreciated!

How would I go about making my own planet texture? I can't use someone else's texture because I'm going to use it for commercial purposes and I don't want to be stealing >_>.

I would suggest trying to take a high-resolution photo of something you would see fit. Old/rusty metal surfaces work best for me because of the high contrast differences and the same kind placement of "landmass" on a planet.

I know this is just for a basic planet but possibly use bumping to get more 3d Texture. It takes maybe 3 or 4 simple steps and makes a big difference. I just thing the planet is a bit too smooth.

i prefer doing spherize twice on most texture's and doing some kind of bumpmap

Oh for Pete's sake - like it's the biggest secret among new space artists??

Mayang's Texture Collection

He offers them for free and is gracious enough to do so. I imagine that should extend to others.

This is great.
I've found other tutorials about it but they are always to big and complex and due to my lack of free time I could never get around to trying to learn.

Just having some trouble with the shadow though

Raforever In reply to Raforever [2004-11-06 15:43:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that helped, thanks again.

Now I've got another question, how do you add it to Terragen pictures

Sorry if I'm bugging you

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

zulamun In reply to Raforever [2004-11-06 11:59:09 +0000 UTC]

Probably the edges of the canvas size?
try making the canvas size twice the size of the Diameter of the planet, eg. planet is 1500x1500, try setting the canvas to 3000x3000, then try it again, and resize the canvas back to 1500²

Ok now we have got 1000 and one planet tutorials. Your method is rather easy to learn. Looks like it is based on other tutorials. I think yours is very good for beginners and new users of Photoshop.

zulamun In reply to Want [2004-11-05 18:50:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, its just a simple way, this is what i have learned from about 3 tuts about 6 months ago, and i've put some of my own ingredients in as well, just my method to make planets, but simplefied

You go around but don't go directly: your tutorial shows the same tecnique as other hundreds shows.
I'm glad to see people sharingn their aknowledgment with other that need help to start out new things (ok it's the 3th time I say it today) but the dA and all the network is over-saturated of this tecnique.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zulamun In reply to xRed-thunderDragoNx [2004-11-21 11:15:47 +0000 UTC]

Never saw anyone use this technique before in my time of looking for planet tuts...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xRed-thunderDragoNx In reply to zulamun [2004-11-21 13:31:20 +0000 UTC]

+dinyctis was the first one that showed this tecnique and yours is based in the same: catch a texture, spherize, put a dark side, an atmosphere and it's finnished. Even if yours have some plus words and tips, is based on the same.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zulamun In reply to xRed-thunderDragoNx [2004-11-21 15:01:24 +0000 UTC]

It may be based on the same, but why do you worry about it so much, if its useful use it, if it isnt dont, please dont comment about the fact that there are other planet tuts, because i know there are, this is how i make my planets, simplified, but alot the same way, and i posted that to help beginners, if you dont like it, ok, but please don't come here and comment that, because other already did, read before you post, and at least think as well...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xRed-thunderDragoNx In reply to zulamun [2004-11-21 15:10:22 +0000 UTC]

I just think it's important make the others notice things that they can't see but will help in the future.
Maybe in the future you will be saturated of these repetitive tutorials and will be commenting as I'm doing.
See, I didn't come saying "you kuckin ripper cloning tutorials" I just wanted to eulogy artists like you that shares their aknowlegment to help begginers, and complemennted with this fact.

I don't wat to get enemis on this comunity because you aren't the first that gets mad with my critique.
As *vissroid says, "arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded".

zulamun In reply to xRed-thunderDragoNx [2004-11-22 15:45:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, its just that you come here and go complain on this, but i know there are other tutorials out there, i just tell people a simple way of creating planets, which i find useful, if you don't like thats ok, but commenting that there are others is just as retarted as arguing
