July 11, 2008 - Zutara Week Day Five - Mythology

this has to be the best zutara piece i made thus far during zutara week. it sooo colorfull and romantic! dont ya think???

i made this in honor of Chinese Valentine's Day, coming up soon.
Chinese calendar: july 7
American calendar: aug 7, 2008

btw, them black thingys flying around them are magpies...
yea i cant draw animals...

(giant paragraph alert - the myth)

In Chinese Myth, there was a mortal man named Niu Lang and a goddess named Zhi Nu. Zhi Nu was a weaver for her heavenly father the Jade Emperor. Niu Lang was a cowhearder.
One night, Zhi Nu and her sisters were bathing. Niu Lang saw their clothes hanging by and encouraged by his cow, he steals them away to see what would happen. The sisters later discover their clothes are missing. They decided to make their youngest sister, Zhi Nu get their clothes back. Niu Lang saw her and asked her to marry him. Because he saw her naked, she had no choice but to accept. They are happily married and have two kids.
Then, Heavenly Empress discovers that a goddess has married a mortal. She takes Zhi Nu away from her husband and children to continue her heavenly weaving.
Down on earth, Niu Lang is depressed his wife is gone. His faithful cow then gave him an idea. If Niu Lang kills his cow and wears the cow’s skin, he shall be able to be with his wife again.
Heavenly Empress finds out. She gets a hairpin and rips the sky so Niu Lang and Zhi Nu may never meet, thus creating the Milky Way. On one side, Zhi Nu weaves away, sad. On the other, Niu Lang takes care of their children.
The Magpies noticed this and took pity. They decided to help them meet once a year by creating a bridge of magpies for them to meet on the 7th night of the 7th moon.
This creates the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day.
