During Wintersession at RISD, I had the great pleasure of taking the 'Science Fiction and Fantasy Illustration' class, taught by Nick Jainshigg - www.nickjainschigg.org/ . the class consisted of five weeks during which we learned about a number of golden age illustrators, poured over books of many contemporary artists, watched as nick demonstrated some painting techniques, and read and made mock illustrations for some really awesome science fiction and fantasy short stories.this piece was painted by me during the third week of the course, and is meant to illustrate the story 'Bloodchild' by Octavia E. Butler. it does not illustrate any particular scene, but rather incorporates aspects of a few, and is in itself rather far removed from the story. it is painted with acrylics on illustration board. This image is somewhat different from the original painting, which has undergone some minor changes to the boy's hand, and the texture of the stone slab. Unfortunately, I have no photographs recording these changes.

I'm not familiar with the story, but the painting does a nice job of telling it's own story. I quite like the anatomy of the multi-legged creature, and I like that you took the care to render them all- as the effect is great!
I took Nick's class... twice! I got so much out of it, as he had so much hands-on experience and would actually paint in front of us. Those six classes packed an enormous amount of info, I'm sure I would have had more struggles in the field if I hadn't taken his class.

The story is a very enjoyable one, and if you can get a hold of the text, I recommend that you give it a read!
Indeed, he really is a great instructor. this coming semester, he's going to be teaching a class all about exploring different mediums, and I really wish I could take it! unfortunately though, I don't have room for electives in the first semester of my sophomore year, with the required classes and whatnot...
On an unrelated note, I just took a look through your website, and I really enjoy your black and white works, you create a really nice atmosphere within those! I was wondering, are you planning to display some pieces at the NecronomiCon in august? it would be really great to see some of your work there, it seems like it would be the perfect venue for you to display in, if you are doing so...

I'm not sure about the Con. When I heard about it a year ago, I was not ready to commit any specific artwork to the show (what if one sold in the meantime, what if I had newer and better stuff by then), so I held off to see how things were going for me. I would like to go, as a lot of friends, fellow artists, collectors and publishers I know will be there. But, as life would have it, I'm not sure if I can attend due to scheduling. Hopefully I can attend one way or another!
