Feel free to learn from me, but I recommend real life reference, like dinosaurs and aligators and birds and things like that! I wouldn't recommend using this as any kind of template.

I hope I'm not rude for intervening but since your on the subject I had a question and thought I'd share my personal experience.
Thats interesting you say that, I've been given this advice a lot before but personally I've drawn hundreds even thousands of dragons and every time I use real life refs like that they never look dragon like, they just look like horrible abominations or just alligator with horns, lizard with wings , dinosaurs with different bodies, fish with different anatomy etc. which was never my intention.
How do you take real animals and make them look like dragons? From my experience Its a lot more than just mashing them together like people suggest. Yours actually look like Characters, not a combination of animals. I could never see the similarities between reptiles and dragons that everyone else sees, other than the scales.

You just gotta keep doing it bruh. My characters didn't always look like characters either, there's more than a decade of crap doodles that came before anything that started to look like something. I learned to compare anatomy between animals and morph the existing parts through trial and error. It's really that simple! It just takes time. Getting input from other artists can help too if you feel stuck on something in the short term.

Thank you for the reply!
I really wish you could share some of the old art you did, though even your worst stuff then would probably trump my best art now. I've been doing this seriously for years and I can't really share the optimism of trail and error. Simple? in some ways yes, but I must say I respectfully disagree, easy? Absolutely not. I feel I'm constantly going in the wrong direction. I did a dragon a day for over a year now and counting and I feel just as confused and under skilled as when I started. And that was after years of dragons before hand too. Keep doing it, is a very hard motto to stick to when I know to get better I have to draw dragons, problem is, I don't have an image in my head to go by, I can't go to a dragon in real life and do a study of it and refs don't help. I think whats worst is, I know my art is bad, I just don't know WHY its bad.
Comparing anatomy is really difficult especially since I feel so in the dark. There are thousands of resources on human anatomy, literally nothing on reptiles and most animals. Plus most dragons I see, don't have strict animal anatomy or move like reptiles I've seen. Though I do know humans have SIMILAR anatomy to animals, that doesn't mean its easy to transfer the knowledge. I don't have many artists or friends to share with or talk to so I'm pretty screwed in that spectrum. Most of them are super busy and don't have the time. Getting critiques and advice has so far been the hardest thing for me. I really wish there was a dragon art forum.

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20… Here's a dragon from 2002. I had that in a portfolio I sent with an art college application. I recall the recruiters looking through my art with me and being really unimpressed, lol.
Maybe you're not as bad as you think you are? There are days I hate my stuff too, and sometimes the feeling persists for months until I can draw my way out of it.
There are tons of animal anatomy books for art, like Animal Anatomy for Artists and Cyclopedia Anatomicae

Thanks for showing! Did you end up going to the art college? Did you have any mentors to help you find out what you could improve on? You made an insane amount of improvement. Back when I started that would have taken me all day to create and I'd have to use a photo probably. And my skill was nowhere near that level imo. I really envy how your new art looks finished, I can't stop making mine look like a finished step towards an end result.
I really don't know what to think of my art, honestly. Comparative to where I want it to be, and what I like, its not close and I hate it. And peoples reaction to it is all over the place. One moment they say I'm super talented, the next, no comment. So I really have no clue. I don't really draw out of hating it, I just dislike it more. Whats worse is the process is usually no fun and what I like looking at the most, the process infuriates me the most. What I don't like looking at, I'm great at drawing, what I love , I hate drawing.
I have read the first book and studied from it but I don't think it shouldn't be called animal anatomy, it should be called mammal anatomy. I've never heard of Cyclopedia Anatomicae, so I'll have to take a look. I have 2 other animal anatomy books you didn't mention too. Great for horses, cats and dogs, but literally nothing else. Unless there is a chapter in the Cyclopedia book, so far I can't find a single book for artists on reptiles and non mammals, there is one on birds but not as in depth as Animal anatomy for artists.

these are the noises I make when I look at these, which is a good thing. When you can make out noises for expressions that means you're doing a great job in drawing them XD
these are wonderful! XD
