You ask how I do the shading, well, it's a lot to do with materials. I use bristol board (a very smooth cartridge paper), a mechanical pencil (2B lead, size .7), a putty rubber (very soft, so you can make it into a point and remove fine detail) and stumps/torchons (these are used to smooth the graphite).
Lots of pencil artists use loads of different pencils/leads, but I've only ever used one.
Couple of tips - find a good photo with LOTS of contrast and remember there is shading all over the face - the skin is not white anywhere (unless they're dead) not even the whites of the eyes are truly white.
Hope this helps and feel free to ask for any advice any time.
NB I can see fom your work that you have the ability and talent to do it really well - you can already see the depth of tones, which many can't.
