I'm afraid I'm a bit confused by your question, I'll try to answer it to the best of my ability and please do tell me if I'm wrong. The obvious way to make friends is just to talk to others around the site, but I don't think that's what you're asking.

To have the friends at the top of the page, you watch them. Unless you un-click the box under 'friend', it will appear in the status box as one of your friends. To display them, as I do, on my main page, it's necessary to have a subscription. Those that are checked as friends will appear in that box.

Under the menu on you main page, go into 'edit setting and profile'. The first option will be titled 'identity'. The first thing you can change is your avatar, and it will have all the requirements. Make sure you follow them carefully; if they're too high (or low on the dimensions), it won't go through.
