Well i personally use the D90... which is the cheaper end of the nikon high performance, high percision line of cameras.... it's treated me really well, but i hear theyre slowly phasing it out, so something like the d7000 might be a good idea...

Aside from the body... lenses make a HUGE difference.. nice thing about them is if you upgrade your body you can use your old lenses. my first lens was a 28-105mm nikkor lens. it was alright for basic landscape and a little bit of macro, but not the best by far.. Second lens i got was a Tamron 60mm F2 Macro lens, which is WICKED.... that is what i get most of my good macro shots with; it made a world of difference. recently, i just purchased a nikkor af-s 70-300mm zoom lens for wildlife photography... im really liking the crazy amount of zoom it gives me.

Prices for all of this (in canada) are 800$ for the d90 body, 400$ for my first lens, 800$ for my tamron lens and just under 600$ for my new zoom lens.... so as you can see you'll be spending way more on lenses than anything else

i have a few buddies who use the d3100 and d5100, which are the cheaper bodies... and i do not like them one bit... they feel flimsy and just don't do the same job as the d90... i would strongly sugest staying away from those. but you know.... if money is no object, you can get the Nikon d3s body for about 5200$ CAD hahaha...
