Ishmael
Ishmael's character always struck me as stuck up, a bit snooty, because he thought that all of his assumptions about life and philosophy were correct despite the fact that he never addressed those that may disagree with him. For example, he loves bodies of water and that every one does as well, but I hate the ocean, lakes, rivers, and streams alike. For his snobbery, I created a vertical nose for his caricature to follow the expression that the pretentious fools of the world always stick up their nose at you. Also, his snobbery is shown through his stuck up lips as you have a clear view of his broad teeth. This presentation of his mouth can also be seen as him having a big mouth, because Ishmael always seems to have something to say about everything. I positioned him so that he is standing on a clock, because he seems to be very impatient.
Ishmael is a daydreamer, a scholarly daydreamer, who is easily distracted by thoughts of philosophy and life “truths”. To represent his dreaming persona, I gave him clouded eyes because eyes are said to be the windows to your soul, and, because Ishmael's soul is drowning in the ambiguity of faith and philosophy, clouds create a sort of mysterious and vague ambiance. Because he is more of a gentleman than the crew and most other sailors and whalers, I decided to give him a clean cut comb over to show that he is well groomed.
As a nomad, Ismael needs a traveling pack of necessary items. Although most likely all of Ishmael's “belongings” would be intangible, I thought it easier to represent his willingness to up and leave anywhere at anytime y giving him that famous cliché ration sack tied to the end of a stick. Despite the fact that he is nomadic, I felt that he had a lot that anchored him to one place. Of course the place he is tied to is Earth, because he has no known home, so his anchoring items range from the representation of his religion to the simplicity of his hobbies. The items and ideas that anchor him to the physical world include his Presbyterian faith, the fact that he is a walking encyclopedia Britannica, his blatant disregard of that which is proper, and finally his ahead of the times lack of bias and discrimination. His religion is a cross, which I put upside down to serve as the base for the anchor. The piles of books refer to his worldly knowledge and also form the curved hooks on the end of each appendage of the anchor. There is a shrunken head dangling from the top of the anchor to show his disregard for proper interests as well as his “bosom friend” relationship with Queequeg as Queequeg is a shrunken head peddler. Lastly, the famous coexist line of symbols is carved into the body of the anchor to show his almost perfect, because he claims in the Whiteness of the Whale chapter that white skin is superior to another race, lack of bias continual urging that there is a give and take in the world that goes both ways, so he believes that all humans, despite there cultural and religious orientation, can coexist if only they could all agree that if they want one group to submit to their own ideas, then that group must also submit to the ideas of the other.
