Zel
----

Name:
Зелимхан Айдамиров [Zelimkhan Aydamirov]

Representative of:
The Chechen Republic / Чече́нская Респу́блика [Chechenskaya Respublika] / Нохчийн Республика [Noxçiyn Respublika]

Nicknames:
Зел [Zel], Чечня́ [Chechnya/Chechnia/Chechenia], Нохчийчоь [Noxçiyçö]

Name source:
"Chechnya/Chechenya/Chechen" --- The term "Chechen" is ultimately believed to derive from the Iranian name for the Noxçi and it first occurs in Arabic sources from the 8th century. According to popular tradition, the Russian term "Chechen" comes from the name of the village of Chechen-Aul, where the Chechens defeated Russian soldiers in 1732. The word "Chechen", however, occurs in Russian sources as early as 1692 and the Russians probably derived it from the Kabardian "Shashan".
"Zelimkhan " --- From Zelimkhan Abdumuslimovich Yandarbiyev, a Chechen writer and a politician, who served as acting president of the breakaway Chechen Republic of Ichkeria between 1996 and 1997. He became a leader in the Chechen nationalist movement as the Soviet Union began to collapse. In May 1990, he founded and led the Vainakh Democratic Party (VDP), the first Chechen political party, which was committed to an independent Chechnya. The VDP initially represented both Chechen and Ingush until their split after Chechnya's declaration of independence from the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
"Aydamirov" --- From Abuzar Abdulhakimovich Aydamirov, a Chechen novelist and poet, author of a historical trilogy dedicated to Caucasian Wars and of the Anthem of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.

Age in appearance:
Young adult.

Age in reality:
Towns were discovered in the area that is now Chechnya as early as 8000 BCE. Horseback riding came around 3000 BCE [probably having diffused from contact with Indo-European speaking-tribes to the North]. According to ethnic Circassian Caucasus specialist Amjad Jaimoukha, it was either the Koban or Kharachoi culture that was considered the first culture made by the cultural and linguistic ancestors of the Chechens (meaning the Chechens first arrived in their homeland 3000–4000 years ago when the two cultures existed). The Chechens are accustomed to democratic ways, their social structure being firmly based on pluralism and deference to individuality. Log before the Russian conquest, they had formed an independent nation with its own language and definite territory, and peculiar, albeit stable, social and political structures based on autonomous clans with mutual support relations that linked them into larger tribal confederations (which generally coincided with dialects). Each clan was headed by a respected elder and decisions were taken by elected councils or plebiscites.

Date Established:
January 10/ January 11, 1991 [As a republic within the Russian Federation]

Astrological Sign
Capricorn

National Anthem:
Song of Shtalak/ Shtalak's Song [Шатлакхан Илли]

Official Languages:
Chechen, Russian.

National Animal:
Wolf [Borz/Борз], because Chechnya saw the wolf as the only beast that dares to attack a stronger animal. Its lack of strength is compensated for by its extreme daring, courage and adroitness. If the wolf loses the struggle, he dies silently, without expression of fear or pain. And he dies proudly, facing his enemy.

Weapon of Choice:
Daggers, either polished or burnished, both could measure up to 60 centimeters long and up to 9 centimeters wide.
Shashka, a feather-light, vine-flexible and razor-sharp ornamented sword. His most prized shashkas are 'gurda', 'kaldam' and 'ters-maimal' ('little wolf').
Bulat, a knife made of damask steel that can easily cut the anvil horn.
His most recent weapon of choice would be the Borz submachine gun. Not the awesomest machine gun you can find, but ssshhh

Socioeconomic Level:
His socio-economic level as a child varied between middle-low to low; he did survive the repeated invasions from about everywhere, even managed to resist the Mongolian invasion twice [the only Russian territory who managed to do so, along with Ingushetia], but it obviously cost him a lot every time. As an effect of the wars and rebellions against Russia [some minor ones are still happening right now], his socio-economic level was never above middle-low, even as an adult. Approximately 80% of his economic potential was destroyed that time. But recently, the economic situation in his land had improved back to middle-low level, since the wars ended until now. Regarding his social level and the application of Human Rights, he was once included in the "Worst of the Worst" list of most repressive societies in the world. Today, things had been going slightly better, but the government still pushed for enforced Islamic dress code and other traditions which, at times, violently repressed people.

Religion/ Spirituality:
He was used to be a Pagan before, but had converted voluntarily to Islam. So he is now a Sunni Muslim, following the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence just like 94% of his people.

Siblings:
His closest familial relationship would be with his twin brother, Ибрагим Айдамиров/Ибра [Ibragim Aydamirov/ Ibra], or the Republic of Ingushetia [Респу́блика Ингуше́тия] [APH-Ingushetia ]; whose language has pervasive passive bilingualism with him.

----------------------
Physical Characteristics:
----------------------

Height:
179cm

Weight:
72kg

Race:
Caucasian.

Eye:
Very pale shade of indigo blue in color with very poor sight as an adult [The poor sight and the paleness was supposedly caused by the massive bombing on Grozny, Chechnya's capital during the wars, that damaged his eyes considerably; and also meant to show Chechnya's very limited view of the world, especially Russia].
As a kid, though, he had a pair of deep indigo eyes with perfect sight.

Hair Color:
Wavy, neck-length, dark golden blonde in color; the hair strands are baby fine, soft and rather messy.

Skin:
White, slightly tanned, rough.

Distinguishing features:
Two moles on his right cheek [meant to show the two times he managed to resist Mongolian Invasion], a scar from under his right eye to his cheekbone [representing the First Chechen War], another scar from above the left side of his lips to his chin [representing the Second Chechen War]...the two wars that changed the shape of his land noticeably.

Dressing style:
For everyday wear, he usually wore a slightly faded green tshirt with white-orange-white-green stripes around the waist [the colors of his flag], green military pants, and a pair brown boots.
He could also be seen wearing white Muslim long shirt that reaches his knee, white trousers, white cap and simple black shoes on Friday and/or religious holidays.
On his national holidays and other special days, he would be wearing his traditional outfit of cherkeska caftan, silver-plated belt, bashlyk hood, papakha fur hat, dark-colored Caucasian boots, and sometimes also wearing burka sheepskin cover.

Habits: (smoking, drinking etc.)
Sometimes he smokes when he has some spare money to buy a pack of cigarettes. But drinking, gambling, and visiting a whorehouse would be no-no to him.

Disabilities:
Since his eyes had been damaged during the wars, his current eyesight is about half a meter at max. Above that, it would look considerably blurrier to him; and this makes it hard for him to determine someone's appearance and expression from afar, which in return makes him a little more suspicious and cautious towards random visitors. His weak sight also considerably affects his combat ability, obviously.

---------
Attitude
---------

Mannerisms:
Zel is quite a hardcore xenophobe that clings hard onto his culture, so he's highly suspicious of foreigners and new people. Because of the wars and the repeated invasions, his initial approach to most people would be unwelcoming, unfriendly, and/or nonchalant. Especially the ones from Russia and/ or related to Russia, for historical reasons. Family is a special case, though. If one would ask him what "friends" mean to him, he'd reply with a statement that he doesn't believe in such a thing. Not that he meant he'd rather be a loner. When he met someone, he'd see them as either a family, acquaintance, or enemy. And he could be an ass towards people, so he would be expecting people to treat him that way as well. Niceness --especially after he's being annoying to someone-- would blatantly surprise him.

In his culture, family is more important than one's own life. There's a tradition in his culture that he named as "Blood Oath"...meaning he will swear on his blood that he will protect his family, defend them, and revenge them for anything bad the others do to them.

Self-image:
Zel saw himself as a proud mountain knight of the Caucasus; thinks highly of honor, dignity, bravery, persistence, and endurance. He tried not to yield to the psychology of obedience; tried not to oblige or please the superiors. He has great pride when it comes to his culture and his way of life, and wouldn't let foreign power dictate what he should or should not do.

-----------------------
Emotional Characteristics
-----------------------

Zel was more of an extrovert than an introvert; had never been afraid to tell people exactly what he was thinking about them, at times with a surprisingly blunt words of choice. He usually had a hard time dealing with anger, tend to be hot tempered and vindictive at most conflicts that pissed him off.

When it comes to nations/states/cities/areas he doesn't know, or doesn't know much, he could be pretty much judgmental and prejudicial. Especially if the said nation/state/city/area had some kind of an above-enjoyable relationship with Russia. He expected most people to hate him anyway, or thinking that he was some kind of a terrorist that will kill them when they weren't looking. So most of the time, especially to people who appeared obnoxious or prejudicial, he didn't feel the need to even bother to be nice.

He can be noticeably stingy when it comes to himself, but on the other hand, he can be generous towards his family and the very few allies he had. He treasured his allies so highly, placed huge trust upon them, and he might usually see these close allies as brothers or sisters in arms, rather than friends.

--------------------------------
Additional Notes on This Character:
--------------------------------

** Chechen language doesn't have curse words. This doesn't mean that Chechen people don't curse. They do, but they use Russian or any other languages to do so. So, yeah, they curse, sometimes a lot...but always in other languages and never in Chechen. To the Chechens, their language may only be used to speak of good things.

*** Fresh from Wikipedia~
"The Chechens are often referred to as the 'French of the Caucasus', for a number of reasons. Compared to their natives, Chechens have, like the French, historically been a comparably liberal people, though this is often obscured in the modern day. Like the French, who overthrew their age-old monarchy in the French revolution, the Chechens had a similar revolution a century or two earlier, and they bore the distinction (for a period) of being the only egalitarian society in an area full of monarchic states. As the French did, the Chechens preferred swift, revolutionary (and often violent) methods to realize the change they wished to see- unlike the Circassians (called the "English of the Caucasus" both for their political and personality characteristics) who preferred more gradualist methods. In the more personality/national character sense (generally the more common use), like the French, they have a reputation for being witty and clever."

*** In the works of V. Potto, ‘Caucasus Wars’.
"They (Russians) found the persistent, stubborn enemy, whose physical strength, and democratic customs, and their whole way of life breathed by war and will. That is...the Chechens."

(( woops I haven't talked to you in a while!!!))

The first they had met it was all by mistake, this time she knew where she was going was dangerous. She had started traveling to his land early in the morning so that there would be no chance of her being left in the dark. In her great plan she had forgotten to find out where he even lived. She wandered aimlessly, trying to stay mostly out of sight as she searched for the building they had stayed the first night they met.

[[And it's too bad that I'm having exam week next week...arhh]]

The main streets were swarmed with people that early in the morning; completely different from how quiet it could be at night. There were some sort of a makeshift market along the road where people buy and sell things, bargaining, offering, comparing...almost like any other normal third-world open market. The only difference was that the people seemed careful and a little bit anxious, though they didn't show fear or tenseness on their faces. There were children too, and elders, and for the moment it looked peaceful enough in the little republic.

The house she was looking for was located a bit further to the upper north side of the land, and she might need to hike for a while. But even from far away, she might be able to spot the blond clad in grayish grey airy shirt and army shorts, no longer having a rifle strapped on to his back as he was just sitting on a wicker chair, talking to some native kids.

(( ughhhhhhh exam week ))

Her eyes scanned the crowd, giving a small smile. The area looked far better in the daylight. She had heard the stories of the terrors this small nation dealt with but the market gave some hope for a better lifestyle. She didn't stay for long as she watched the people. Her eyes trailed to the sky, it wasn't the dark black with makeshift light from lightning, it looked almost calm. Scanning the land afar, her eyes widened as she saw the house. Her hands made little binoculars that only changed her view enough to see his physical features. Her grin widened as she quickened her pace, finally having a direct area to go to.

By the time she had gotten to the house, she was out of breathe. Her pace wasn't running speed but the up slope made it more tiring than a usual jog. She bent down, holding herself up at her knees, as she got her breathe waiting for her heartbeat to slow down. She looked at the man she had been searching for, a wide grin appeared on her face. "Hello, dear. It's been quite some time," she mumbled, her breathe slowly returning to normal speed.

[[Indeed. And I hate how I never feel ready for exams OTL]]

He was in the middle of talking with the kids, and he noticed when the kids seemed to glance towards someone else and no longer looking at him. Due to him being used to bad news, his initial thought was that it was his neighbor, Russia. But the kids' faces seemed curious instead of tensed. So he glanced to the direction where their eyes stared, and saw the brunette holding herself up on her knees.

Of course, he couldn't help but to feel a bit silly at his own suspicions. Back to the kids, telling them to run along as he got himself a visitor, he stood from the chair and walked towards her, patting her back lightly as a sign of familiarity gesture, then stepped away, motioning towards the chair. "You looked like you've been hiking." He commented, putting his arms on his pockets, leaning on the wall. "Sit down and rest for a bit. Kinda not expecting you to come in the morning like this, though anyone who doesn't plan to erase me from the map is always welcome."

"Ah, I'm sorry if I came at an inconvenient hour. I just missed you, before I knew it I was already on way here," she laughed, standing up straight. "I'm just out of shape," she huffed, blowing loose strands of hair from her face. It was true, she rarely ran anywhere, she was more laid back and didn't rush to place. Plus, she always liked to ride her motorcycle. She walked towards him, kissing both of his cheeks, a custom to greet people in her country and most of Europe. She looked back embarrassed, "I forgot you are not custom to close contact," she backed away, her hands fumbling with each other.

The Chechen turned to see the woman, frowning, narrowed his eyes at the familiar features. He only realized who it was when the woman got closer, and in an instant, his frown loosened a little. "Assalamu'alaikum." He replied, his tone calm and welcoming. "You seem well."

"I apologize for not coming." He frowned, "I didn't even know. As you know, the flow of information to and from here is limited. I barely know a thing of what is happening beyond these borders." For a moment, he was silent. But then he turned his gaze up at her again. "Two boys, that is good. Seeing who their mother is, they'll be strong, brave, and dedicated men one day." He nodded, wondered who was she married with and whether live's been kinder to her after the marriage. Being a fellow region of the Caucasus, he thought as Armenia more like family than friend, and curiosity of another's well being would be natural among family.

"It's okay; it's been about three years since we were married, and we wanted something a bit quiet. A lot of people still don't know." She said, laughing a bit, "But, the boys have proven to be more like they're father than they're mother." Armenia said, smiling a little.

"How are things for you?" She asked, curiously tilting her head.

"Either way, I assume it's a good thing that you're married, because you look noticeably happier than the last time I saw you. And as I said, I'm doing better recently...sort of." Zel picked up a big toolbox and walked towards his house, motioned for her to follow. "Come inside, and tell me more about your family. My house's not much, as you know, but at least you can rest for a bit after the walk from your place."

Armenia smiled thankfully and helped him with his large tool box. "Yes, it has been really good for me since I got married. Life's certainly a lot more enjoyable." She said, looking up at him, "And, honestly, I doubt your house could be that bad; espically with the conditions that you live in, I bet you take good care of it."

APH--Chechnya In reply to HetaliaArmenia [2013-04-19 00:48:01 +0000 UTC]

The house was small, as she probably had seen before, and it was decently decorated. From the vague scent of fresh paint, she might be able to guess he had just recently repainted the walls. But here and there, obscured by the humble gray coat of the paint, hidden a little behind wall decorations and handwoven rugs...there were signs of damage as a result from the decades of war. It was good that the wars had officially stopped several years ago, but it wasn't like he had enough saving to fix everything back to normal. True, he had transformed his war-torn capital back, but other areas would have to wait.

Motioning towards a nearby sofa, he placed the toolbox next to the short coffee table. "Sit down, relax. I'll get you something to drink. Craving anything specific that I might have?"

Armenia sat down with practiced perfect posture, her back straight and her knees and legs together, "If you have coffee, that would be great, but if not, then water's just fine." She said, brushing some hair behind her ear as she took in the place. It all brought back so many memories; not really happy ones, but ones filled with a different type of family, but still a family.

The Chechen brewed a fresh pot of hot coffee, brought it to the table along with two earthenware mugs. For himself, Zel would prefer straight black coffee, but he took three small jars with tiny spoons and put it on the table as well. "The coffee's fresh, but it's plain, bitter. There's sugar, milk, and honey if you want it sweeter." He filled both mugs with coffee, pushed one to her. If only she came a few years earlier, he wouldn't even have water to offer to guests as he had to ration everything for his people down to the smallest details. But recently, as he mentioned, some things did get better. Even if some got worse. He glanced at the Armenian, his face has the characteristic half-frown as usual, though he knew his close acquaintances knew it already how --even when he was feeling good-- a frown seemed to be his default neutral expression. "How's your people nowadays? And your boss? Anything especially notable happening recently in your place?"

Armenia added a little cream and honey to her coffee, stirring it thoughtfully. "I've been doing alright. My neighbors to the east and west have closed off my borders, so I can usually only export through my ally, Georgia." She explained, looking at him with a slight smile.

"Things haven't been completely great, but they aren't bad, either. What about you?" The Armenian asked, her smile growing.

"Good, at least it's not bad for you." Zel was silent for a moment, sipping his coffee without exactly looking at it. In fact, he wasn't staring at anything in particular. When he broke the silence, instead of answering her question, he asked, "How's your relationship with Russia nowadays?"

Zel sipped his coffee again a bit, "I told you, things are better nowadays. Some of it, at least. The wars had...officially...been over for almost four years already." He crossed his legs leisurely, his posture and expression was calm except for his clenched left fist. He relaxed his fist slowly when he spoke again, "As you might've guessed, I just fixed several things around here. This place was nothing more than a pile of ruins four years ago. Now it's standing again, nicely and decently." He nodded, more to himself than to her, but then he looked at her, "So you two are friends now, huh, whatever that means. Congratulations, then?"

"We'd been 'friends' for a few years, allies since the Soviet broke up." She explained, taking a sip from her now sweet coffee. "And I'm glad things are at least slightly better for you. If you ever need anything, I'll always help you, okay?" Armenia asked, offering a small smile.

Her phone began ringing, and she hurridly picked it up. She had looked at the caller ID, and smiled before answering, "Hallo." She greeted, answering in her husband's native language.

Of course. He actually knew little of what was happening all these years, since his land was so ridden with conflicts he couldn't spare energy to do much else apart from trying to solve the conflicts, fix everything, and did all in his power not to let many more of his people die, be it from violence, poverty, or both. And inside he was grateful for Armenia's offer. But he knew he couldn't ask for her help. Asking for help meaning that he'd have to drag her into his problem, and there would be a high possibility of her losing allies for siding with him alone.

"Okay." He replied anyway, nodded a bit at her smile. When she picked up the phone, he noticed that she wasn't talking in her own language, but others, and though he ignored the content of her sentences, he was curious nonetheless of who was speaking to her from the other side.

Armenia found it rude that her husband had interrupted her conversation with her friend she hasn't seen in what seemed like forever, and so made their talk brief. "Thanks for telling me, Elli. I'll pick them up later. 'Love you." She said before hanging up, turning back to Zel, "My husband just told me he dropped our sons off at football practice, and that I'd need to pick them up later." She explained.

He nodded with a flat "I see." And sipped his coffee again. He didn't really mind it, considering that it was sort of unexpected, in a good way though, that Armenia still remember him after a long time. Unlike some of his old acquaintances that would prefer to ignore such a bond ever existed with the Chechen. She had a good live with her own loving family now, which, on his eyes, she very much deserved. Perhaps one day, when he wasn't under so much pressure, he could come by and visit her place. Perhaps he'd come in a surprise. Ah, yes, he'd like to do that.

"Your husband...his name is Elli?" He looked at her, "Where is he from?"

She raised her eyebrows thoughtfully at him before answering, "Yes, his name is Elli Beildschmist; he's German." Armenia explained. "That's why I answered the phone when I did. We usually do little things like that, even if he doesn't really know Armenian." She said, taking a drink of her coffee.

Alright, at least the man wasn't from some certain nations that he wasn't on very good terms with. Germany welcomed quite a lot of his people emigrating there without being too prejudicial, so to hear her marrying a German was actually quite a good news. "I'll visit your place to meet your family once my boss allowed me to." He looked at her, "You haven't told me about your current boss. Is he a good man?"

"First, if you'd like, me and my family could come visit you, no? Maybe on a trip of somesorts. And two, my boss is doing okay. He was reinstated on February eighteenth, and things have gone decent." She explained, Absentmindedly curling a strand of hair around her finger.

"No." He replied to her idea with a quick headshake. "My place might look quiet, and you might be okay just wandering around the land. But despite of how things got a bit better nowadays, my land is still a warzone. You shouldn't take your whole family to a warzone. You know that." Finishing his coffee and poured some more to his mug, he glanced at her. "Well, then it's all good, as long as your boss isn't some kind of a tyrant. It'd be hell trying to get rid of those."

Armenia sighed airily as she was shot down, then looked to the clock on her phone. Dammit. It was already time to go pick up her sons. She wanted to spend more time with her friend, then got another idea.

"Could you at least come with me to pick up my sons? I'd love for you to meet them, and my oldest is just wild about micronations." She said, giving him her best begging expression

Actually he was wondering whether he'd scare her family like he scared most people who barely knew him. But then him coming with Armenia might ease their suspicion and fear, if any. And he would very much like to meet the family of one of his closest acquaintances. Drinking the coffee quickly, he let off a satisfied 'ah' and sighed, "Very well. But don't blame me if I scare people at that school just by appearing there."

Armenia playfully scoffed, giving him a smile, "You'll be fine, Z." She assured, standing up and grabbing her car keys from her jacket. Quickly zipping it up, she went to fetch her shoes which she had discarded by the door.

With a short sigh, he shrugged and nodded to her smile, "Alright." He put on an old military jacket over his shirt, tie up the laces of his boots, then stood up, turned off the light on the front room, then locked and barred the front door with a plank before following her to her car.

Armenia got out to her car and unlocked the doors, jumping into the drivers side and opening the passenger door for Zel with a button in the car.

He got in and put on the seatbelt; not owning a car himself would definitely be no excuse to forget how unpleasant his rocky unpaved roads can be. Apart from his recently rebuilt capital city, most roads on his place would be like that after all. "How old are your kids again?"

As Armenia slid on her slim sunglasses to block out the bright sun as she backed out of the gravel drive way, "My oldest one, Cyrus, is fourteen. His younger brother, Abel, is twelve." She answered, pulling out onto the road.

"Fourteen? So you've been married for quite a while, huh?" He commented lightly, looking outside the window towards the empty road. The watch posts along the roads stopped the car once at a time, asking for papers as it was routine on his place.

"Sixteen blissful years." She responded, stopping the car and pulling out some papers from her car.
