I just love languages. I always grab a newspaper from Chinatown when I go down there. Sometimes they have coupons.
Damn you Mandarin. (Japanese is so much easier.)
I want to get a black wig and just wear sunglasses when I go to Cinatown or the Korean grocery off Belmont. I know a lot of customs across different countries and try to respect it but people just think I am crazy.
When I went to the Korean grocery yesterday for food supplies I greeted the old man at the door: "Annyong haseyo."
He just looked as if I had kicked him in the balls. I know how to pronounce it right too. So I was just like: "God damnit. I just should have smiled and not have said a thing."

I actually went to a chinese high school.. they allowed me to enroll there but i started off as grade 1 chinese, lol.. i never learned to speak. just a few words like "piao liang"(youre pretty , "ni sher hao mei" (you are very beautiful") "sye sye" and a bunch of words and sentences,, not conversational.
Yeah, japanese is easier,, but when kanji is in, that's the time when it gets hard.

My reply was a mixture of glancing around me, standing up on my tip-toes and then sighing before walking into the store itself.
Then when I go to to Chinatown I ask for things in Mandarin. As practice. Sometimes the people like it, sometimes they do not. Mostly the men like it when I try to speak. I am pretty decent. I know how to ask: "How much is this?", how many of something I want and "Thank you."
I am still trying to figure out how to ask: "Do you have a lighter?"
