👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Adam-Novagen In reply to Cocostix [2009-07-06 19:30:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Well... It's rather difficult to explain, and it's just an expression I use, but here goes...

Assuming one believes in evolution at all, Humans are always evolving like any other species. One notable way we've evolved is in our lifespans: we've gone from about 30 years maximum to 80 years average. Another way we've evolved is in our minds. Our brains have become far more sophisticated than they were in our caveman days. Except in one major way: instinct.

All Human psychology, as far as I'm concerned, is still ultimately rooted in basic instincts. For instance: the modern Ego. It's an advanced version of the self-preservation instinct. Think about it: Egos give us a sense of personal worth, a desire to continue with our lives. Lose your Ego, you lose your drive to keep going. People with poor Egos don't fight or try to defend themselves when attacked physically or emotionally. Hence: Ego = self-preservation.

Everything else can ultimately be equated down to basic survival instincts. Reflex actions: survival. If grab something hot, you instinctively whip your hand away. You could say that your brain has a basic logic circuit which goes, "If HandInPain = True Then MoveHand(Fast)". Instinct. Now, that may sound like pretty good logic, and it is, most of the time. But what if jerking your hand puts you in worse danger? What if, say, there's an angry snake watching you, and your sudden movement could cause it to bite? Common sense says, "the snake is far more dangerous. Keep still." But instinct says, "your hand is being hurt! Get it away!"

Thus, instinct can be a problem if allowed to run wild (heh, no pun intended.) And in today's modern world, a world run by cold, logical, powerful computers, a world of thought, and of efficiency, there's little need for our animal instincts. We still need those instincts, but they should no longer be controlling us.

That's where this evolution thing comes in. I'm slightly different from the average person, in that I was born with the ability to override my instincts when necessary. Now, does this mean I'm totally in control? Good lord no; that's not the way evolution works. It goes in stages, not leaps, and if I were in complete control of my instincts, I'd be a mutant rather than an Evo. But I have that ability, nevertheless, whereas many people seem to physically lack it. Yes, I said physically; the brain is a physical object like any computer, and its physical structure, its "hardware" if you will, makes just as much difference as the information stored in it.

So, there you have it. I said it was difficult to explain, and even now I haven't done a particularly good job, but it's the best I can come up with. I'm not some superhuman; rather, I'm the start of something new. Not better or worse, just new. Different. I'm a single step in our evolutionary progression to... What, exactly?

Only time will tell.

Cocostix In reply to Adam-Novagen [2009-07-06 19:47:41 +0000 UTC]

ok...two things...this was the longest reply I have ever gotten in my life... O.o
and the second thing: thanks for the pop psychology...it was interesting to read...and well, I guess its every man with his thoughts, if you consider yourself to be an evo, then do so, no one has told you otherwise...I just think, perhaps...a little less arrogance, cause that's not very evolved of you...perhaps its more like...a de-vo...right? hmmm...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Adam-Novagen In reply to Cocostix [2009-07-07 15:57:43 +0000 UTC]

Arrogance has nothing to do with it. I told you, I'm neither better nor worse, I'm just different. A dog (as far as we know) is incapable of performing calculus, or producing a large-scale painting. But Does that make the dog inferior, or make us superior to it? Absolutely not.

If you saw any arrogance in my explanation, then either I did a worse job of explaining than I thought, or you considered it an arrogant statement from the start. As I said, I'm not a better Human, nor am I a worse one. I'm just unusual. Atypical. Different from the majority. That's all.

Adam-Novagen In reply to squeekipigg [2009-09-13 16:59:19 +0000 UTC]

When the general world population actively starts controlling themselves right down to the instinctive level, I'll agree with you. Until then, I'm not special, but I am unusual in a way that personally (only my opinion though) believe to be better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squeekipigg In reply to Adam-Novagen [2009-09-16 17:46:21 +0000 UTC]

but everyone can control instincts! and you can't control all of them, therefore you are the same as everyone else!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Adam-Novagen In reply to squeekipigg [2009-09-17 15:29:30 +0000 UTC]

Actually, there's no way to prove that everyone can override instincts, because very few people do. I control far more on a daily basis than most, more than some even control in a lifetime. Most people aren't even aware of how strongly their basic, animal instincts govern their psychology, so how can they possibly control something they don't know is there?

Adam-Novagen In reply to squeekipigg [2009-09-18 22:09:07 +0000 UTC]

For one example, take the concept of revenge. If someone does something to you, your natural, instinctive inclination is to "get your own back" on them. Why? It's an instinctual logic circuit based on the self-preservation instinct. It goes something like this:

Pain = Damage
Damage = Danger

If [person] causes damage then Destroy [person]

The idea is that, by "destroying" the source of your "pain," you protect yourself from any future pain, which your brain instinctively equates with damage and personal danger.

However, it's ethically and logically unsound to seek revenge on someone. To do so only perpetuates the animosity; an eye for an eye, and so on. Thus the war escalates. To override the instinct of revenge is something that's done quite rarely, yet I've never seeked revenge in my life. I've wanted to many times, but I've overridden the instinct for what I believe to be a better course.

Anyway, we'll probably never agree on this, and really, it's not important. Either I'm right, and I'm some kind of "next step" in Human evolution, or I'm just a deluded, conceited prat, and either way, it doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things.

squeekipigg In reply to Adam-Novagen [2009-09-19 16:29:41 +0000 UTC]

well neither have i taken revenge, it just depends on you're personality not your instict-suppressing ability.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Cocostix In reply to Adam-Novagen [2009-07-07 16:18:37 +0000 UTC]

well, thanks for the clarification

I guess you came off somewhat arrogant when you sent me that looooong reply, but I completely understand where you're coming from now
I like to think I'm wise beyond my years...which is somewhat arrogant, to a certain extent... so aren't we all arrogant? Perhaps just subtle

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Adam-Novagen In reply to Cocostix [2009-07-07 22:40:34 +0000 UTC]

Heh, yeah, I hear you there. I can also see how my initial response could seem like that. I basically have two "modes," one of which is very deep and thoughtful, but when I'm in that second mode, I often go overboard with intellectualism. That's not a bad thing in itself, but it's not the easiest thing for people to relate to.

Also, I have a confession to make: although I try not to be arrogant, I am definitely an Egotist. It's my biggest strength, and my biggest problem. Which is why I often tend to talk longer about ME. Not that I don't talk for long times about other things; I once typed over four paragraphs of text about what I thought SEGA was doing wrong with Sonic the Hedgehog.

It's like I say: I'm like a very fine, strong drink. Taken in small, controlled doses, I can produce joy, warmth, laughter and song. When taken constantly, however, I tend to simply produce nausea, headaches and disorientation.
