Argh, Susie how am I supposed to include the King-Byng affair in my history project? Like, here's two teenage girls and they're just like 'Yep, that King-Byng affair, eh?' And the other's like 'Oh man, that Mackenzie King, he really knows how to deceive the general public, teehee!'.

This is Laura and KC. We are at school (our first flex day of this semester!) and we are working on the battle strategy. We were thinking that our plan should be plant some mines, detenate them, move troops around the ridge, throw in bomb at the second line, and then charge in... and just to let you know we want this typed up and we were thinking in typewriter font!!

Sounds reasonable. Remember that we're also outfitting troops in the field with compasses and radios and having several airplanes in the air running real-time tactics to the officers. Also, one large push forward, so the Canadians and British and Australians ALL go in at once, instead of just having the Canadians sent in to finish the battle after a bunch of little assaults.

Our mission objective:

Mission Objective (battle of Passchendaele):

The third battle of Ypres, in which the Allied army took the town of
Passchendaele from the Germans, lasted three months and cost 300, 000
Allied lives. It comprised nearly a dozen small battles and the main
objective was the small and strategically insignificant town of
Passchendaele. Our objective is to reduce the number of lives wasted
in gaining the town of Passchendaele. We will do this by placing mines,
detonating them, then bombing the enemy lines. This would be
done not only to distract the enemy but to reduce the German numbers.
The shelling would be put into action against the second German lines
so that the machine guns employed by enemy troops so not break apart our
own ranks. Then we will send in our troops, around the ridges. We have
chosen this strategy to avoid problems such as exhausting our resources
during numerous attacks.

AdisCrow In reply to lobster-popsicle [2011-02-25 01:10:43 +0000 UTC]

The main problems with Passchendaele:
- it was fought in small assaults over a three-month period, which meant unnecessary loss of lives and resources (six kilometers in three months, compared with Vimy Ridge, where the Allies gained two kilometers in four days) - can be fixed by waiting for Canadian troops to arrive, meanwhile using planes to run reconnaissance, and then making one large well-planned assault

- insufficient battle training - can be fixed by using the months from October to November (when Canadian troops arrived) to enact ACTUAL training sessions with real tactics and strategy, not like the crap they got before coming over, and using planes with radios to run real-time tactics sessions with officers in the field

- misuse of artillery (shells): they used shells in every one of their small assaults, creating the pitted landscape that made it so hard to fight - we would use shells the way you suggested: once we had exact locations on the German artillery and bunkers we would shell the living daylights out of those areas immediately before moving in for the assault

I'm just starting to read through the Wikipedia entry to check my information, so some of this might change, but I think that that's the basic stuff.

ALSO: We're focusing on the parts of the battle that directly concerned Passchendaele, right? So from October 12 to November 10.

Obviously you will change your mind in a couple of hours, time travel to get back in order to skate, and then you will forget you time travelled only to go home and MEET YOURSELF. There will be an epic battle, and the Susie who never skated will write this very message to me, three hours ago. THEN SHE WILL DECIDE TO TIME TRAVEL IN ORDER TO SKATE. But Alas, the same thing will continue over and over again. YOU SHALL BE SKATING FOREVER, SUSIE.
