There was a time when I want to make a Macross doujin but with original characters and setting; I was almost done with the plot when I realize that why bother with other material when with some extra work I can make it completely original? So why make manga when you can make other things?
The answer is probably to borrow the popularity of then franchise to make yourself know... Your thought on that?

Well, it's more like a desire to show that we can use the art style ouselves, if we want, and keep the plots just as good. Although, riding the coat-tails of the popular does make things easier.

Is there a need for that? Japanese are also people, so the things they can do anyone else can. Although I know there are people who automatically switch off when they see a style they don't like, that is pretty much how the biz work; you can either stick to what you got and produce what you want risking small audience or chase the rating and try to please the audience.
So far I dont see anythings new in American comics, they are still locked in the age old setting, secret agents with gadgets (spawned from Bonds movies), super heroes ('nuff said), fantasy adventure (spawned from Tolkien's, witch and wizard (who know where this came from) and what ever Startrek and StarWar produce.
So I guess the differences is not only in the art but also the story telling style and narrative medium. Take a poke at that.

Saw your drawing (Character sheet for Quantum Shifter) on the main page. I see that you had a lot of characters and stories and imagination.
If you're doing it all for fun I definately think you'd make a good kamishibai author.

Basically a kamishibai that is computer based involves an author/artist taking their story and...well making it. ^.^
But you use sounds, images/animations, music, etc. to enhance the story telling experience. The stories can be funny or they can be serious. Like if you watch the kamishibai series "Legend of Aledarte" you get that sort of...Record of Lodoss War feeling. Kamishibai is an excellent way to practice sequential storytelling. All you need is the viewer and you can pretty much watch any kamishibai out there.
There are some downloads available at the Atelier. You should watch this one first:

It's made by Rikki Hyperion and is REALLY good. Just download the file and use the viewer to watch it. If you have any problems feel free to ask. Kamishibai are fun (I've made near...40 different ones now) to either just watch or make.
