I don't SUPPOSE that I could CONVINCE you to make an ICON GIF out of the ARTWORK in QUESTION, could I?

Sabamenides In reply to Alenceon [2012-03-11 04:50:46 +0000 UTC]
I'm guessing that by "icon gif" you mean one to use as an avatar, like the one I use but animated. Yeah, I could do that, since it's mostly a matter of resizing. However, if you intend to use it here in deviantArt, I'm afraid I'm unable to. The reason is simple: the maximum avatar size here is 50x50 pixels, which is OK, and 15kb, which is far too small for this particular work. I can try to resize, index it's colors, even remove half of the frames, but the smallest I've been able to shrink it with an "acceptable" quality is 32 kb. Without any loss of quality except that due to it's smaller size, it's 82kb. If I try to make it even smaller, it becomes unrecognizable even before reaching the size limit.
That been said, if you want to use it someplace else with less strict size restrictions, I'll happily send it to you.

Well, given that I am a SHAMELESS WHORE for INCREDIBLE ANIMATIONS I'll probably apply the icon to as many as FIVE different sites.
I spent ENTIRELY too much time on the INTERNET to have that many ACCOUNTS. MOST of them only require the image to be SQUARE.
Well, I would LOVE to have an ICON from you. I even WAGER that if you posted it here as a DEVIATION it would draw significant ATTENTION and APPRECIATION. I personally feel that the QUALITY of your entrancing FRACTAL is too GRAND to pass up a CHANCE of having an ICON of it.

I guess I could make an animated icon pack out of it, but it would require a bit more work. Besides, since I don't have a lot of accounts in different pages, I don't know the exact dimensions that are used nowadays; I'm guessing that making a pack with images sized 100, 125, 150 and so on would be the best choice, and I believe 200px would probably be the upper limit for forum avatars and such, but it would be nice if you could tell me the most common sizes used, since you have that many accounts and are probably a lot more knowledgeable about those sites than I am.
Also, I believe it would be best to keep the image upright in those icons, unlike my personal avatar which is turned 45ΒΊ clockwise, what do you think? Also, do you think I should "chop off" a tiny bit of the icons' corners to make them smoother and make those bits transparent for them to blend with the site's background, or keep them completely square? I've always been a little bothered by how sharp the corners of my avatar looked.

Well, since you've asked my HUMBLE OPINION, I will GRACIOUSLY OFFER all that I know.
For sites with REQUIRED ASPECTS, a nice 50x50 is the STANDARD required, though most SITES will accept any SQUARE. A PAIR with just the 50 and a 150 would give both the STANDARD and a HIGHER QUALITY version. I think it is INSIGHTFUL to leave the ORIENTATION VERTICAL, and it might be INTERESTING to FORMAT the image a bit. ROUNDING the very TIPS of the CORNERS would give a more ORGANIC look, where a SHARP FADE might lose some of the ANIMATIONS considerable IMPACT. The GLORY of the MECHANICAL SUN animation is what you want to HIGHLIGHT. If you FADE at the EDGES, it needs to be a very RAPID fade approaching .9 RATE of TRANSITION. One more METHOD might be to EMBOLDEN the color of the FRACTAL and then make the currently BLACK background TRANSPARENT. It would be STRIKING, surely, but it wouldn't be as VISIBLE on certain SITES.
ANOTHER thing to CONSIDER would be that the STANDARD file size LIMIT is 2Mb for the TYPICAL FORUM. You'll have to be MINDFUL of how you FORMAT the IMAGE to stay within that CONSTRAINT.
FINALLY, is to the +WATCH, you absolutely DESERVE it for your ARTISTIC TALENT.

Ah, 50 by 50 is rather small to simply resize the animation while keeping it upright... I'll try to make the lines a bit more intense and thicker so they stand out more at such a resolution. Thanks for the information, those two sizes sound good for a pack. I'll try a few simple things and see how it turns out. However, making the background transparent with my current knowledge would require a lot of work, because every frame has a black background; I would need to paint part of each frame transparent to make it work, and since the .gif format only accepts full transparency/full opacity, it would become a bit grainy. I'll try anyway and see what I get.
I would build the .gif again for the transparency, but sadly the original high-quality frames, which had a transparent background, were lost many years ago in a hard drive crash.
I agree, a smooth fade wouldn't look very good in an avatar, and it wouldn't look good given the .gif's single bit of transparency either... I was thinking about a sharp edge at 45 degrees, but only taking a very small part of the corner as well, to take away that feeling of squareness that is unrelated to the animation's roundness, but without it being striking either.
2Mb? Sounds feasible, especially for the 50px avatar. I don't know about the 150px one, but I'll check it out.
Haha, thank you , you do me too much honor considering how little I've uploaded so far.

NONSENSE, you DESERVE the RECOGNITION. I can only ASSUME that you've done much WORK that is OFFLINE. I know that is the TRUTH in MY CASE. I am a PHYSICAL ARTIST; I work in CLAY, CERAMICS, and GLASS, so very little of my ART ever makes it to the INTERNET even though I've done CONTRACT WORK. EVENTUALLY I imagine that I'll have the MEANS to get HIGH QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHS and I'll WHIR into a veritable BLITZKRIEG of UPLOADS. My PHYSICAL work makes me all the more ENAMORED of ENTRANCING digital ART. BESIDES WHICH, I've been looking for a COOL NEW AVATAR for MONTHS, and your FRACTAL certainly FITS the BILL.
Back on the SUBJECT of your FRACTAL, after more CONSIDERATION the TRANSPARENT version would have to be RECOLORED for it to POP enough, so it really wouldn't be WORTH the EFFORT. ADDITIONALLY, if it help you to RETAIN more SHARPNESS, the TILTED VERSION would still be AESTHETICALLY PLEASING as an ICON given the RADIAL SYMMETRY of the FRACTAL. The most IMPORTANT part of the ANIMATION is the SPIDERY LINING that you can see in the ORIGINAL. The CLOCKWORK aspect is the INCREDIBLE ASPECT that you want to PRESERVE.
