Hey, man. I just came back from a huge and sorely needed hiatus, lol. Just thought I'd let ya know that I took your advice and I'm starting an animation course at Uni next year Wondering if you could give me any advice on what to expect?

Hey. Everyone needs time off sooner or later. Congratulations on taking the first step! Which animation course are you doing?
Depending on the course, you're most likely going to do a lot of theory work in the first year. So most likely it would be about animation history, practices and techniques. The next year will probably be more hands on/practical work, where you start animating. But I don't know if it is the same for each course. Expect to do a lot of hard work because that is what animation is. It is worth it in the end though. If you have anymore questions just ask or send me a note.

Thanks for the congratulations
It's a Media Arts course at University and I'm majoring in Animation... I don't actually get to do any animating til my second year though. The classes are called 2D and 3D Animation. Thanks for your help I really love animation and always have so I figured why not make a career out of it! Are you having any problems in terms of finding a career in animation, because I've heard both bad and good things from different sources.

You may have to be weary about the animation courses you choose because a lot will say Animation on them but they might be more generalists (as in, they might also do modelling, rigging, animation, lighting, rendering). And those courses may not necessarily teach you about animation instead they'll set you an animation assignment and you'll have to figure out the rest.
Even though you don't get to animate until your second year, I recommend trying to animate anyway. Whether it's in Adobe Flash or another program. ย As for 3D, depending on how much you're exposed to Autodesk Maya or Blender or another animation software, it will take you some time to get used to the program.
Try not to lose that passion! It will help you when times are rough.
You hear good and bad things about many different jobs but at the course I was at, we had an industry professional come in and talk to us about what's going on in the industry.
There are jobs out there for animators. The only problem is getting that first bit of experience - your first job - because naturally studios or clients want animators with quite a bit of experience in the field, like 3-5 years experience. So a lot of people try freelancing. Or others do projects within the university. I'm trying to get into studios because I'd be working with other people just as crazy about animation as I am. It also means I might have to relocate down to Melbourne if I want a better chance at getting into an animation studio - because there are a lot more studios down there.
If you want to know more, just ask. I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks for your reply!!
It's the only University-level animation course offered in my state so I don't have much of a choice haha! I hope we're not expected to figure things out on our own because I'm not the best at that lol -_-
I'll definitely try and practise... I have done a lot of animation in my spare time but not much lately because I've been so busy with other things.ย
I'm currently working freelance as a graphic designer so do you think that would be good in terms of experience for getting another animation-related job in the future? My grandma also has contacts within an animation/advertising company in my city and I might be able to get some experience there, he takes in people from the Universities and Trade Schools in my area.ย

You're welcome. A lot of your work reminds me of the ex-Disney animator Glen Keane. You have a wonderful collection of drawings, studies and animations.
