Thank you Your art is stunning as well. You make the princesses so beautiful and realistic looking ^_^ Your Ariel and Tiana are my favorite. I love how you do your lighting and fabrics, something I'm still trying to figure out

Oh my god, thank you! It means a lot coming from such a talented artist! I am a fashion historian, so I am constantly working with many paintings, mainly from the XIXth century, but also some from late XVIIIth and early XXth century. They can be very helpful for figuring out the lightning and the way the fabrics and textures work. Of course real costumes can be even more helpful, but they are not so easily accessible.

Oh gosh thank you again! ^_^ Β I have such a hard time being confident in my work, I'm always picking it apart before I finish and so I finish pretty few lately lol, but I'm working on it Β I think it's awesome that you're a fashion historian, it must be really interesting. I love making up characters so I've done a bit of research for the ones that need to be historically accurate and it was so fun, I learned a lot. But some periods are really difficult to find information for when I don't know where or what to search XD.Β

Thank you, it is cool indeed! And yes, it can be hard, I certainly know what you mean. If you would like some help with anything you can always ask. Academic research I have to make leads to finidng many informations, so maybe I could be of any help. My area of expertise is, however, European Regency/Victorian/Edwardian fashion, so I may not have a maximum extend of knowledge on other periods, but some stuff you always have to learn.

That would be a big help! Thank you! If you aren't too busy, I know it isn't your area of expertise, but would you know anything about Ancient Greece? Specifically around the time of the first Olympics (between 800-700BC). I know it is a very difficult period to find specific information about because it is so long ago, but even if you just knew of a good reference book or website I could look into it would help a lot

Well, the good news is that ancient Greek fashion was pretty static. It didn't change much, over the course of the whole centuries. The rapid changes in styles and fashion were not present in the ancient Greece, so you don't have to worry about being too specific. Generally a Greek garment is just one big rectangular piece of fabric, which was draped over the silhouette. Same went for both sexes. There were not many types of garments, but there were many types of drapings. If you want to see what kind of drapings were 'in' around specific period your best shot will be to find sculptures from the given period.
There were generally three types of fabrics in use - wool, cotton and sometimes silk. Colours were mainly white, sometimes with decorative borders. Remember that the period you asked me about is Archaic Greece. You won't find much more info on it, however all you need to remember is that this was really plain, simple, very little colour, draping was not yet too overbearing, generally simple and plain, and white. Don't stress on it too much, as I said the ancient Greece didn't really change fast in terms of garments, if it changed at all.
Really, if you'll look for Doric culture and the 5th century BC sculptures and dress (that's the closest better documented period to what you're seeking) just bear in mind that the costume some centuries ago would be very similar, only maybe plainer even, and less drape-y and decorative.
But if you want some more info I would recommend you to look for 'archaic Greek art' and 'archaic Greek sculpture'. This will be the best visuals you can get. As for the books - the great way to learn something is always taking Francois Boucher's "20,000 Years of Fashion". This is a big, heavy stuff, but it has lots of photos, and it's very well written. You can also try Carl Kohler's "History of Costume". It has a well documented antiquity section.

Thank you so much, this is a big help! I'm definitely going to try and get those books you mentioned too. Now I just have to come up with a final draft of my character Β Thank you again. And if I could ever return the favor and help you with anything, just let me know I know a bunch about anatomy, character development and Photoshop.Β
