Resident Nerd,
Archer,
and Tree Doodler.

I am a full-time college student who teaches archery nearly every saturday morning, and makes art on the side.
I love natural materials and forms, and tend to work them into my various projects.
I really enjoy trying new things, and experimenting with different mediums and techniques, so constructive criticism and critiques are always welcome, because I have a whole lot to learn!

Ich auch ein sehr wenig Deutsch verstehen. Ich habe nur ein Jahr an der Uni gelernt, und brauche ich mehr Übung

My ID photo was taken by Erin Jamison, who was so kind to let me share a few pictures that she took of me down at the range!

That sounds like a lot of fun though! I've never played, myself, but I have a friend who has an ongoing game all set up offline, and she seems to really enjoy it!

It is xD you should at least try it x3 i do create a lot of characters xD around one a day o 3o and they all have a special background x3 even the basic classes and races :3

Ha, I think I might when things are a little more stable, and a little less crazy! The character creation part sounds kind of neat.

seth-ravenclaw In reply to Arboris-Silvestre [2016-05-13 09:55:11 +0000 UTC]

do that xD the character creation is indeed really neat x3 too bad that some things can make your character a bit overpowered when you have them right from the start. you can be a lot of races and a lot of classes xD but some races have level adjustment o 3o which means when you use it, you become a lower level o 3o like, you want a character which has level adjusment for 4 levels, then you need to be at least level 5 xD and then you are back at level 1 o 3o you need to be at least 1 level higher than the level adjust, ment you need xD there is also multiclassing o 3o then you have two classes with your character but you can only level up one at the time o 3o so kinda like level adjustment xD but multiclassing is as far as i know more annoying as level adjustment is one time only o 3o and then you have the features of that thing. but with multiclassing its raising one at the time o 3o you need to choose between the two classes xD i myself have a couple OC's of mine converted to the DnD rules xD but your character can be an ordinary human fighter but still be special xD the character of the character defines it x3 his personal traits. like he's an adult but still acting like a child, he is good at a certain skill, he's insane or anything else you want xD my most normal characters are kyo tera who is a human sorceress. but she is born a goddess but banished due to her failure in a test xD she wants to take revenge on her father o 3o and as you can kill gods, its perfect for her xDDD i also have nakut, a half-elf druid o 3o he doesn't show who he is as he has a fully covering costume xD no skin is showing and distrusts any humanoid creatures like humans or elves or orcs or those kind of things o 3o he eat through his mask and sleeps through meditation xD he hates all people who harm nature or natural beings o 3o or like lycanthropes, those are in it as well, people who "pretend" to be part of nature xD

well, i don't shoot yet ^^' as i have only a bow but no arrows. i wanted to use it for larp and not really with metal arrow tips and i was so stupid not to get arrows from the guy i bought the bow from >.< now i need to buy arrows separately...and if i want to practice it probably need to be at an archery range. and there is not really one near me x.x i'm not even sure if its legal here to carry a bow WITHOUT arrows in here o 3o

Arboris-Silvestre In reply to seth-ravenclaw [2015-08-03 20:23:57 +0000 UTC]

Ah, ok!
haha, I've no idea what sort of arrows you'd need for larping (except that they're probably built to be super safe? )
Heh, that might have been wise, but I guess you can still look for em elsewhere. Just as long as they're built for the stiffness of your bow's pull, they'll shoot well for ya You can always buy the parts separately and build 'em too (which is what I normally do -its cheaper in the long run).
Eeeh, Yeah, I wouldn't have a clue to how the Netherlands handles things like that. I haven't had any issues bringing my bow into restaurants and stuff in the summer to prevent it from getting heat damage in the car, but it was always in its sock and unstrung. A friend of mine took her whole setup on the train a little while ago without any trouble, but yeah, that's kinda sketchy

You might have to look around a bit though. The range I shoot at is an hour away, and while there are a couple of ranges closer by, they weren't as nice, and didn't have quite as good of a public program. I'm sure there's something though. It just might not be as conveniently close as you'd like

seth-ravenclaw In reply to Arboris-Silvestre [2015-08-04 05:56:43 +0000 UTC]

larp arrows need to be padded o 3o the most are padded with a thick layer of foam with a thicker core at the tip to prevent it still penetrating anything xD i also saw some arrows with a pouch-like end. kinda like how you would make a flaming arrow (or at least in movies and games)
i'm not sure what kind of arrows i need for a 30 pounder i have literally no knowledge over bow making or fletching (thats what its called, right?) so i didn't even know that there were different arrows for different weights xD and i'm not sure if buying parts in here is cheaper as i probably need to get it shipped in here o-o i might make the arrow tips myself though x3 the steel ones for practicing.
i think unstrung and in its sock, then its fine to carry it i think o 3o otherwise i think its illegal

i see o 3o well, the only shooting range (for archery) i know off is in the city. i live like an hour cycling from the city and then i'm not even at the range xD i do think you need to pay for it though as its an archery club (?) its actually the only ranged weapon we can have that i know off xD guns are completely banned from the netherlands and i actually don't even like them. but i'll look for archery ranges nearby as well o 3o around the area. or else i need to wait till i moved somewhere else to start shooting.

Arboris-Silvestre In reply to seth-ravenclaw [2015-08-05 06:27:43 +0000 UTC]

Ha, I figured they'd hafta be super padded! I was under the impression that there were special larping arrows that are like super regulated or something?  But I guess if there are standards...
That's kinda neat with the pocket-thing though

Oh man, arrows are some of the most finnicky things on the planet. Bare bones, you need arrows that are matched to your draw weight at your draw length. So if your body is proportioned so it can only pull the bow back to 28iches at your anchor (the spot on your face that you pull your hand to every time you pull the bowstring) then with your bow, you'd probably want arrows "spined" to 30-35 pounds and have them cut to like 29inches. Fletching is pretty easy, especially if you have a clamp or jig, but it's not impossible to do without. Consistency is definitely the goal, unfortunately, haha.
I dunno if the shipping price would be worth it, but I do know that Easton makes a decent beginner line of aluminum arrows for around the draw weight of your bow. Check out the Easton Jazz arrows -you may have to swim through a bit of jargon and seemingly senseless numbers before finding out what some of the stuff means (these people can be wordier and more convoluted than I am ). But at least here, you can get a good dozen of those arrows fully finished for a relatively decent price. The club I belong to uses that particular model for their public program, and they've taken quite a beating, and have held up relatively well so far.

Huh, that's kind of interesting! I think we've got more gun ranges than archery ones, but yeah, I'm with you. They're not as fascinating to me, and not to mention, gun-sports are way more expensive than my archery addiction, haha . Hmmnnn, hopefully it's closer than you think? Best of luck with the search in any case. And even if you've gotta pay a small range fee, I'm sure it's not too bad. Most of the ones I've seen here charge around the price of an average burger per hour shooting, and only one I know of charges the same amount you would pay for a nice dinner on an hourly basis. And once you're affiliated with a club you like, it's more than likely that your membership dues will be way less than what you'd be paying on just a sort of casual basis. But if you can find a place with decent instruction, I'd stick to it like glue, even if it takes finding someone who teaches it at Uni. Good instruction early on is soo invaluable for a beginning shooter

I apologise for talking (typing?) your ear off. Equipment stuff doesn't condense well

seth-ravenclaw In reply to Arboris-Silvestre [2015-08-10 07:19:38 +0000 UTC]

yush indeed. they have to be really padded xD but i know at least 2 sites where i can buy larp arrows or arrow tips :3 in the netherlands x3 they are the usual teardrop shape but i think i will buy some extra cloth then to hide them and to make them look like pouches x3 and ofc there is also etsy but meh x ux

www.etsy.com/listing/241891494… in here you can see the arrows i mean o uo

well, i kinda just measured my draw length and its somewhere around 24 inches. i'm not sure how to measure the draw weight tho ^^: as i also need to watch out with how far i draw. for larp i can only draw with a weight of 25 pounds and i don't know how far i need to draw then x.x and i really don't want to buy another bow yet.
do you know how to make arrows yourself? o 3o how did you learn that and could you be able to teach me somehow? xD
i see x3 i will definitely check them out then o uo thanks for the info x3

we do have gun ranges xD but not much either. guns are illegal in here without a license AND being a member of a shooting club. so are the bow and arrow as far as i know. i didn't find an archery near me except for one i already knew. there are only two in this province and the second one i found is too far away x ux but the one closer to me isn't open for new archers sadly TT^TT well, not yet at least. ts quite expensive o 3o it was around 85 euros. thats more in dollars xD (dollars have less value but only a little) and i'm not sure if thats per month or per year x.x i really hope its per year...it probably is or else they wouldn't be full for applicants.

i also heard from a friend that her father would like to teach me how to make arrows x3 both blunt and sharp i think. not sure if with metal tips though, would be nice x3 i think i will also try once to make an arrow tip o uo as i just started with forging ^^

Arboris-Silvestre In reply to seth-ravenclaw [2015-08-11 07:27:51 +0000 UTC]

Those arrows are actually really adorable. The little bags totally make them
They look decently easy to make too, once your hands get the hang of fletching and arrow building!

It's definitely possible that you're pulling at or just under 25 pounds at 24 inches. It's hard to say over the internet, and without knowing the model of your bow (plus I'm not the best person to ask about bow brands, lol. I know a couple of big ones, but that's kinda it) but if you can get your hands on one of those fish scales, or I guess any sort of scale that you hang objects from to test their weight, you can know for sure. All you need to do is hook the bowstring with the scale's hook, and pull it back to 24-ish inches, and read the number on the scale. It's also handy to have a second person around to either read the scale or help you hold the bow or something with the awkward device on your bowstring, but yeah, it works pretty well. If you don't mind me asking, what bow did you get?

Haha, I do! I've been buying the pieces separately and preparing things myself for upwards of three or four years. These ones are made of bamboo arrow from a company in china fav.me/d5fha5n -They came in a big bundle, and I sanded the existing finish off, lacquered them, painted the stripes, bought nocks and tips from another company, glued them on, bought a dried turkey wing from a native american event, cut the feathers off with bolt-cutters, removed the fat middle part with a razor blade, and cut them into fletching lengths, and glued them on. Since I shoot off my hand, I decided to wrap the ends with thread, to make the arrows less likely to scuff or cut my hand.
It's a ton of work, and I guess it sounds a little bit daunting, but all in all, its really not that bad, especially when you spread it out over the course of a couple of weeks or months. And I guess you don't have to go as in-depth as I did either
These guys: fav.me/d58i5x7 were a little simpler. I just lacquered them, glued on points and nocks, and purchased more-processed feathers that were way less difficult to turn into fletchings.
-And this spring, I talked to this old guy at a big competition about making arrows from pretty much scratch. All the guy buys is target points (the bullet-shaped ones for practicing and tournaments), and feathers, and glue. He taught me how to select and dry several different types of materials for arrows, and sent me  back to my camp laden with an armful of different (and weird!) arrow shafting materials that he's collected. I've as of yet not had the time to dig into them, but I'm really excited to, and already have a few apple branches from my yard seasoning at the foot of my (totally useless) fireplace (because who needs a fire in the hearth, when you rarely need a jacket?).

But yeah, when you start getting into it, I'd be more than happy to try and point you in the right direction It's not as tough as it looks, and it's more tedious than anything else. But I tend to like tedious projects, so it's kinda perfect, haha. There are a few startup pieces of equipment that you'll want (all of them easy enough to procure over the internet), but there are also lots of things that you can sort of fudge too -like carving your nocks into the back of wood arrows with two hacksaw blades taped together.

Ouch, that's a bit pricey! It sounds (hopefully) like an annual price? The club that I belong to gives us a couple of options -either we volunteer 18 hours (I'm waaayy over that already, haha), and pay $45, or we don't have to volunteer and pay $90-ish. And they've got a special deal for families and couples, I think, which is also really nice. Hopefully yours opens up soon though! It must be pretty decent if they've had to bar applicants for a little while.

Ooh! That sounds like fun! I'd definitely take him up on that offer if you could. Lucky! I've been keeping a passive open eye out for somewhere I can try out knife smithing. But metalwork in general has such a fascinating process ^.^ -and it's super useful too!

ikr :3 yush indeed x3 they can probably be made with those small foam balls you can find at dollarstores sometimes o 3o -still calls them that to english people even though we don't use any kind of dollar- and reinforced with like a penny or so o 3o so they don't penetrate the ball too much xD

well, i'm actually not sure o 3o i guess its a recurve bow xD i got it for 150 euros from a festival stall o 3o the person i spoke with was really bad at english, couldn't speak any dutch and was from....germany i guess xD but i'm not even sure of that, looking at the website of his o 3o

i see x3 sounds really interesting o uo those arrows look really good x3 i like the bamboo arrows more just because when i go for looks, i go for details xD and that guy sounds like a really interesting guy x3 i also would like to build my arrows from scratch xD and then i mean completely from scratch, except for maybe certain tips o 3o but further to make everything myself x3 including the arrows and getting the feathers from like chickens or turkeys or whatever kind of birds ^^ the glue also home made and actually natural o 3o i saw a video the other day where a guy used a kind of glue made from rabbit skin o 3o it was a jelly like substance which you needed to heat up until it was liquid-ish and spreadable over the arrow o 3o i'm also a little into forging o 3o i'm currently making my first knife xD i probably need more charcoal the next time i forge >.> and also start sooner. but at some point i want to forge every metal object i want and craft every object i would like xD like with the baskets i would like to make them as well x3 and actually the same for like pottery from river clay. i still need to find out how to make the heated clay water and heat proof e.e then i can start making things for food and stuff x3 but thats largely off topic xDDD that fireplace you can also just burn when the sun goes down x3 just for light ^^ not really for heat. well, that also depends on the fireplace itself on how it looks o 3o but still x3 if its like a firepit or a cage basket ish thingy then you can easily use it for light xD or else if its such a kind with an inside fire with one opening for the fire to be fed and one opening at the top for the smoke or heat, then it can just be burned for aesthetics x3

ah x3 well, i've seen a few arrow making videos o 3o i sorta know what to expect xD i bet bullets are easier to make with the right materials xDDD but thanks that you want to help me x'3 -huggles-

i see o 3o what kind of voluntary work do you do then? i really hope they have something like that as well in here xD even if it are just a few stupid jobs =w= i doubt they have that though. and indeed they seem to be pretty busy xD with a good  budget x3

yush indeed xD i actually am planning to go live in the uk in the future o 3o buy a patch of forest in there, maybe two crossing ones, (i need to swim in money for that =w=')and live with a few friends in the forest o 3o we are planning to live there as self sufficient as possible. i even want to make my own iron or steel then xD like from rivers or ther places where you can find the minerals for iron or steel o 3o i know steel is just carbonized iron, getting its stengthfrom charcoal or coal so that wouldn't really be a problem. one thing'sfor sure, i need more charcoal for my forge and the next time i buy iron or steel (just from the hardware store) i will get square or flat bars xD no round bars. you can barely get a good grip on them, especially with gloves.

Oh yeah, probably! Haha, that's kind of funny Do the McDonalds in your area still have dollar menu items? Or do they have like a 1euro menu over there? I've heard of both existing in various parts of Europe (like I think in Germany -or at least some parts, it's the euro menu). I suppose little wood blocks or cyllinders or something with holes drilled partway through would also work! Might be a little more secure than just a coin, with some of the lateral motions and stuff going on.

Huh, all right... If you link me to his website, maybe I can decipher a bit of it? I can read a little bit of German (if the guy is indeed from there, haha) -All else fails, just seeing the shape of your bow can tell me a little bit about how the poundage is gonna stack

Thanks! Those were my favorites too -they flew beautifully and looked pretty sweet But yessss... little details are also my favourite!
Yeah, the guy was super cool. He just goes out and gathers stuff from all over. Makes some really neat primitive bows to go with the arrows. And is like the ultimate grandpa. I must have sat with him for the majority of the afternoon with a big cup of iced tea, and when one of my friends came down with a bad case of food poisoning (she doesn't handle American food very well) he and his wife took her into their little camper trailer and let her lie down, and gave her soup and tea . It's definitely the best trad competition all year. Just about everyone is super, super nice.

Ooh, that's cool! I've read about making fish-skin glue for laminating wood, and putting sinew or rawhide backings on whitewood bows, but it definitely makes sense that you can make it out of just about any critter. Apparently a huge drawback to those kinds of glues is that they're really sensitive to moisture though. So if it's sort of rainy or humid, you have to go to some pretty serious lengths to keep it from losing its sticky.

That's super neat though! You'll hafta post pictures when you're done! Haha, dude, I so want to do all of those things too! Supposedly there's a way to do your first and glaze firing in a furnace or something similar to what you've already got, so you at least get that water resistance for your pottery (but man, would I love access to a kiln! ) Haha, my fireplace isn't as legit. It's just a gas one with fake logs and a little glass and metal grate-window-thing. But I guess that's to be expected for generic suburbia,

At the range, I mostly teach beginner classes and help out with the traditional class for more experienced archers. I've gotten nationally certified to the point that I could take someone up to a high competitive level, which wasn't required, but the class was open and I wanted to learn, so I took it. Most instructors have a certification one step lower than I do (which is the one that's required to teach at our club), and there are a few who went even further than me with their certs . We generally hand out waivers and gear, and take groups of people downrange, and give them a sort of personalized lesson, and wrap things up with having them all compete for balloons with dollar bills in them. And the more experienced people show up a tad later, and shuffle off to various classes, both formal and informal. But not everyone has to teach to volunteer. Handing out equipment is a big one, and so is prepping for tournaments, and doing just sort of general range maintenance and stuff, so at least here, there are things just about everyone is able to do.
Yours is probably most definitely run differently, but hopefully they offer some better membership tiers and stuff (maybe you can go in and talk to them anyway? Sometimes once you get to know a few people, they can make exceptions, or notify you just before they open their doors to newbies) , or at the very least a student discount or something

Haha, that sounds pretty sweet! I've always been somewhat jealous of the people who have easy access to acres of forest and stuff. It's so gorgeous. Sounds like it'd be a lot of work, to live self-sufficiently but also really, really neat. Awh, haha, I suppose that might be a bit of a problem! I dunno if it's readily available, but I've seen some people work steel cable bundles into a vaguely Damascus-looking blade www.osoforge.com/images/Finish… -The round steel bit sorta sparked my memory. Watched them do it, and since the fibers of the cable had a little give to them, the guy seemed to have very little trouble getting a grip on things, and pretty quickly hammered it out into a decent-sized rectangular billet-looking piece. Was super neat

sorry for the late reaction

well, i don't think they have those little foam balls there xD but yes we have euro menus there o 3o yeah true xD but i mean like a 1, 2 or 5 cent coin. the 1 and 2 cents are probably too small so i may use some 5 cent coins IF i use coins o 3o but you're right. i probably need something bigger than just a coin x3 but too big is also bad as that might hurt still. and what do you mean with lateral movements? o 3o' i haven't heard of that term yet xD

www.dreamerbow.com/ here is the site x3 good luck with translating it xD i can understand a little german as well but i cannot speak it. tho, this is gibberish to me xD i will make a pic of my bow then soon as well x3

i see x3 i would love to meet someone like that ^^

i see. i don't know that but it wouldn't surprise me xD i mean it are organic stuff, they suck up moisture and rot as well so i doubt they will last a lifetime or longer.

i do have a kind of kiln xD i could use my lil forge to do that x3 not sure how but i can try it o uo ah xD so mostly a decorative fireplace? thats also nice x3 except that real fire looks better.

i see x3 sounds really interesting o uo i've just looked a bit more into the archery world near my home and i found more than those two xD a couple quite far away and also a few who only shoot on wednesday evenings (which i can't sadly cuz of HEMA TT^TT) but i found one which may be possible to become a volunteer as well. its like almost 2 hours traveling by train and i'm not sure about the contribution in there as they only show the minors till 17 years old. but i think i will ask my friend to come with me one day xD they are open for new members and my friend lives in Assen (the city i found it in) so he could guide me to it.

yush x3 well, here in the netherlands its quite hard to find a big forest, except for the veluwe in the middle of the country which is a massive natural monument in here xD after i'm done with my study (in two years) i will try to find a home in one of the towns near there x3 it'll probably be very expensive but if i have a job it wouldn't be such a big deal o 3o yush xD its quite a lot of work. you need to have the resources in your area and also have the knowledge but i think with a few tutorials and some thinking by ourselves, we could do that as far as i know steel cable isn't that easy to get here but these look really nice x3 i like the bowie and the tanto the most ^^ the mini seax as well tho o 3o i probably also need to learn how to weld them into a solid piece then xD i need to learn that anyways but i've heard that sand was used for forge welding in the past o 3o i'm not sure if thats true or not tho. do you know that?

It's okay! I'm sorry I haven't exactly been that timely either! I've sort of been under the weather the past week -a funny pressure system passed through, and messed majorly with my sinuses, and I ended up getting a whole lot of nothing done as a result.

Ahh, haha
Oh! I mean that when you release your arrow, it's going to sort of "swim" through the air like a fish. So those side-to-side (lateral) movements could cause the normal practice tips of your arrows to slip off of the flat surface of your coin (unless they're super giant or something, haha) regardless of how well you've taped them on there. Plus a larger piece of something on the end of your arrow will slow it down faster, and make the impact less painful by spreading out the force a bit.

haha, ohgod. Google says some of it is in Hungarian, but there are a couple of pages that are relatively readable in German
They're gorgeous bows though. Asiatic recurves look so sleek and pretty. They also have a tendency to have high arrow-speeds and make the bow-weight that you're holding feel a little less heavy than their differently-shaped cousins at the exact same weight (largely due to string angles, but that's kind of a confusing topic, lol.). That might mean you may be dangerously close to going over the 25lbs limit, since most of the power is stored earlier on in the pull as opposed to later on. You'll find that when you pull at first, the draw weight will feel unexpectedly heavy, but the more and more you pull it back, the weight increases less and less. (if you like graphs, I can dig up a sort of interesting one from one of my bowmaking books that demonstrates the different pull-tendencies of some of the different bow shapes -if not, that's totally cool though )

Oh cool! You ought to give it a try!
yeah, it's mostly decorative, haha. I agree -real wood or charcoal fires are much nicer.

Ooh, that's exciting! Though still kinda far away -though your public trans is much nicer than the systems we've got here. The trains are expensive, and have weird schedules, and don't always go to major places you'd wanna go to. It's nice that you've got a friend nearby though Have you gone there and checked it out yet?
What's HEMA?

Sounds like a good plan nonetheless! Hopefully it all falls through, or you at least get fairly close!

I think sometimes you can find it at some home improvement stores by the rope and chain, or places that sell building materials as well (it's usually sold by the foot or yard, as they've got a giant spool of it). The guy I saw had a bunch of short lengths wrapped together with wire while he was heating and welding the fibres together, so he got the desired girth, so it didn't look too terribly difficult -course he's incredibly skilled, so that might have something to do with it, haha.
Huh, I've never heard about the sand thing! Not sure how that would work, but it's definitely neat-sounding! Is the sand of a particular composition? Or is it just there to keep a constant teperature or something?

i see ;3; what are sinuses then? with me its just that i really want to reply but its hard to do that with large texts xD

i see xD i got arrows tho now o 3o i shot once at a festival last weekend with three targets and a couple fake animals. i only aimed at the fox as i wanted to hit it but i missed every shot ;3; i should've given up with the third arrow... but i see xD well, i will buy the entire arrows at first uwu its better i think but also more expensive.

i see xD well, i bought some arrows from the father of a friend of my mom o 3o and he told me its a...cavalery bow? riders bow? horse bow? yush a horse bow. in dutch its called a ruiter boog xD a ruiter is the rider of the horse and the boog is....the bow ofc xD but i actually figured out myself really simple how long the arrows need to be o 3o its a 30 pounder and you can draw it as far as 30 inch so the arrows need to be 25 inch for them to be shot with 25 pounds, right? xD and sure x3 i would love to see it ^^ lets hope i understand it xD

yush i will xD once its dryer and i can dig up clay =-= well, i can dig up clay easily as the ground in my garden is clay ground. i do wonder how you need to clean the clay from any dirt o 3o do you know how?

no not yet xD but i found out that there is an archery club in a town close by x3 i only need a bicycle =-= i lost it at the trainstation in the city.

HEMA is a store in here xD a warehouse kind of thingy but the HEMA i mean is historical european martial arts o 3o short, HEMA x3 basically every martial art which was practiced within europe o 3o mostly with weapons like swords and daggers o 3o i got a few books of it xD one of medieval swordfighting, renaissance swordfighting and viking combat x3 i really would like to learn more about messer combat. you know what makes a messer a messer? o 3o its made like a knife xD like your average kitchen knife with two handle scales riveted against the tang o 3o which you can see all the way through the handle xD but there is another sword similar to the messer o 3o the messer was just a long knife back in the day xD the falchion was a war variant on the messer o 3o its blade was like the messer but its handle was like a  sword o 3o a guard, a tang through the handle and a pommel, riveted or peened xD which basically meant that the tang went through the end of the sword, the pommel, and it was hammered flush on the pommel so it was secured o 3oi'm not sure how they heated the tang at the end without ruining the pommel or if they just heated it within the forge but that may have burned the wooden handle o-o

i hope so too x3 and if you want to, you can join as well o 3o i am still thinking about if we should have electricity or not. it would be better if we left that behind o 3o but its still debatable xD we do want to go to canada then o 3o its probably our best choice. in the uk its illegal to do what we want to do o 3o but in canada for what i've heard its good xD we also  only need for hunting a license to shoot with bow and arrow o 3o as we can't make gunpowder or bullets xD and its legal to set up camp there o 3o we do need to plan ahead for at least a year by then o 3o i'm thinking about for myself and my gf at least, to at least store a lot of food, make sure we stay warm during cold days and sleep in a tent while building our house o 3o we all make our own house tho xD we are able to help eachother with it tho if the owners of the house want it. we probably will use as less "modern" things as possible o 3o except for maybe water xD i'm also thinking about making a sort of sewage system for rain water. a bit like the romans did o 3o

ah those things x3 we have them here as well but i wonder if they really are good enough for forging as i'm afraid that there is plastic within the fibers x.x but i think i will try it once ^^
well, sand is also used for glass o 3o like its basically made from a small part of krystal and small part of other stuff o 3o when its glass it basically binds the metal together and pushes out the air which might be trapped in there. i'm not sure if its true tho xD i might try that. i also need to have a bucket or canteen of water where i can quench my work in o 3o to cool and even harden.

Yeah, that too... It's cool though if you don't mind gaps in some of the convo I won't forget to respond in the middle though, I promise

Oh! sinuses are the network of passages in your nose, and related areas. They connect your tear ducts, and mouth, and I think run by some lymph nodes. Any time we get a pretty significant pressure change, mine swell up and fill with mucous, and it feels like I've got a cold when I really don't

ooh, congrats! Haha, it'll take some time to get things shooting where you want them to be shooting. Animal-shaped targets can also be kind of tricky. They have foam ones like that at a lot of the competitions that I go to (Just a few a couple times a year), and they like to make the shots challenging!

Horse bow makes sense too! Seems no one group can decide on a name for things -I've seen them called horse bows, scythian bows, asiatic recurves, mongolian bows, mongolian HORSE bows, and static recurves   -I'm sure language differences don't help things either, haha.
Ummm.... It would be super clean and convenient if your bow worked with the 1pound-per-inch increase, but usually it's not the case
Your bow would look like a little more extreme version of line C in this graphic www.acsbows.com/sitebuildercon…  You'll build more tension earlier on in the pull, and then after a certain point, you won't build as much (it'd be the exact opposite if you had purchased a short D-shaped longbow, instead)
-though since you said it's measured at 30inches, you might be safe? Iunno. You might hafta just measure it to be on the safe side If you or anyone you know has a fish scale, that's a great way to measure it

Oh cool! We've got a ton of clay about a foot down in our garden as well. No idea whether any of it is pure enough to actually throw and fire though, but it's definitely red and kinda slick. I'm not really sure how you'd go about preparing any of it though. Or even if your clay is the same as mine. I'd assume you'd dig a large hole until you've found some that looks pure and unmixed enough, and then work from there, but It'd probably be worth consulting Dr. Google, haha.

Oh, that's even better! Bummer about your bike though. Did someone lift it?

Oh. Haha, that's super clear
Sounds like a super sturdy knife though! Maybe there's some technique to getting the scales on without messing with the pommel or anything?
I really wouldn't know... Sounds super neat and fun to do though!

Haha, That'd be really neat! Iunno how much use I'd really be though -By then I'd hopefully be involved with a testing or research lab, so I dunno where I'd be And I'm none too familiar with the plants of Canada. 'S way different than the ones growing in southern California.

But yeah, running water is a good thing to have. A friend of mine has a cabin that has no electricity or running water (they do have a septic tank though, which is much appreciated), and I realized that I don't mind the lack of electricity so much, but plumbing is something that I really really enjoy. It's a pain to have to haul in buckets from the creek and then boil it if you want to consume any of it

I think the plastic thing depends on what kind you're able to find. I've seen cable both with and without it  It'd definitely be cool though. Lemme know how it turns out if you give it a try!
Oh, ok. So it'd have to be a sand that's rich in silicon dioxide then!
That'd be helpful!
Speaking blacksmithing, I caught wind of a place a couple of towns down from me that does classes for $60. When my schedule frees up a bit, I think I'mma give them a visit

yay!

ah, you mean the "pipes" you breath through? o 3o that sucks x.x i have that sometimes as well that my nose is full of mucus but i have that every once in a while. especially during winter xD

i figured xD i don't know if i told you before but i can shoot at a field next to the farm of a friend of mine o 3o sadly, she is sick and i can't shoot there yet x.x but i see x3 it still sounds pretty amazing to be able to hunt with bow and arrow o uo and being good at it xDDD

wait no, its the sythian bows from that site xD sythian, syrian, the syrian bögen on the site of dreamerbow x3
too bad xD but how would that look then? o 3o' i indeed need to get one myself or ask for one at the people i know xD the 30 inch limit is basically to me, i think, that its drawing 30 pounds at that point o 3o as it can draw 30 and the length can be until 30

no clay is the same or start completely pure when its dug xD you have brown clay? in here we have black or gray clay o 3o i'm basically purifying it by throwing the clay in a container and fill it with clay for one thirdh with clay and fill the rest with water. then i crumble the big chunks of clay and dirt and then it basically separates itself o 3o the clay water floats ontop and i pour it in a separated container and continue with that till the clay is separated x3 i found a site about that method. www.practicalprimitive.com/ski… this site am i using ^^ i'm not yet at the part where the water will float ontop. i probably need to filter it from any floating material lighter than the clay. like sticks and grass and roots o 3o and no i didn't dig deep into my garden xD i actually dug it right from the surface x3

well, i left it at the train station in the city o 3o besides, i can't go back with it as the tire is also quite soft x ux

they probably just hammered it until it was done xD or they kept the scales wet so they didn't burn o 3o

well, if you are handy with certain crafts and other things, then thats only good xD but you are welcome to join x3 you would be the best archer then tho ;3 the best hunter~ i don't know the plants there either xD we will need to learn about them tho o 3o i barely know the plants of the netherlands either xD

well, i want at least have a tank or a few tanks for rain water at every house xD then its just going outside or to the tank and filling it with the needed water and done x3 also a few filters for the water are needed xD

i will ^^
silicon dioxide? o 3o whats that?
yush xD i'm thinking about a wooden bucket or not. at least not a plastic one x ux
i see :3 good luck with that ^^ in here you can also do blacksmith classes but i want to figure it out mostly myself first xD

Yeah, mostly There's a more extensive network that kinda goes into your forehead area and under your eyes and stuff which is what normally gets inflamed when there are allergy issues and stuff.

Oh, that's lucky! -Well, not lucky that your friend is ill, but yeah.  If it's a flat grassy field, have fun finding the arrows that miss the target they have a funny habit of burying themselves at the top of the root-level. I've lost a good handful of mine at competitions that way.

Unless you've got some ridiculous height on you, or super long arms, I doubt you're drawing 30 inches unless you're pulling the string way past your head. I'm five foot ten, and my draw is 29 and a half at my anchor, and that's pretty long for a girl -but if you're pulling 30pounds, then you miiight have to find somethin' a little more LARP friendly...  or make a conscious effort not to draw very far back.

Yeah, it's a little redder than the clay in the guy's webpage It's kinda pretty.
That's a really neat site though! I had no idea that's how you prepare the stuff! It looks pretty simple too.
Ahh, ok! Good luck, haha

aw, that's a shame.

I'd like to think I'm pretty handy  Iunno if I'd like to live like that the whole time, but it'd be a nice getaway from the busy and tech-intensive world from time to time.
Rain collection is good I'm in the process of convincing my parents that it would be a good idea to install ran-barrels in our yard to catch some of the sparse rain that we get.

It's the stuff most glass is mostly made up of Not all sand has silica (i think volcanic sand is lacking? )

I'm sure that'd be helpful! If I'm not mistaken, don't wooden buckets require a bit more maintenance? They certainly look cooler though.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to it in the distant future!
That's definitely another way of doing it. Youtube is a very helpful thing.

yes i know x3 but i never knew that they were called sinusses in english o 3o we call them, literally translated, air pipes xD

i noticed xD i lost three of the 6 arrows i had while shooting at another friend's home ^^ she has a large fairly empty garden, mostly grass, with a field behind it. between the field and her garden are also a trench. i was lucky all the time when i shot next to the target that they were mostly in the trench xD but i lost one arrow, one arrow broke and one arrow....i don't remember xD or i still have four arrows o 3o 3 or 4 arrows xD i need more arrows soon x ux

then you are quite small o 3o sorry to say that if that bothers you and yes i know xD the limit is 30 pounds but i doubt i can draw 30 pounds anyways o 3o

i see x3 now i do wonder how it looks o 3o
yush it is xD well, now you know x3 i haven't continued preparing it tho o 3o i need to continue today or tomorrow or at least soon.
i doubt i will harvest a lot of clay tho ^^' its still not much from what i got out of the bit i filtered.

yup. now i need to look for a different bike xD i didn't like that bike anyways e.e

thats true x3 you are always welcome from my side ^^ the others are also really friendly and i doubt they wouldn't welcome you xD
yush thats always good to catch rainwater x3 its the cleanest natural water in the area probably xD and also handy for the garden o 3o

i see i didn't know that o 3o but i think if i got the right natural sand and filter it from any other things than the sand, that it could work quite well x3

they probvably do need more maintenance o 3o or else i would need to get a metal bucket or a large clay pot. i doubt the clay thing would work as its too fragile to make large things out of xD and probably also to hold water. i did see people making bark containers from birch o 3o maybe thats an idea ^^

yush indeed x3 and how is it going with the workshop forging? o 3o any progress?

Oh, yes

Oh, haha, that's a bummer! Stuff like that's unfortunately gonna happen but you'd definitely get better?

really?  I'm like five inches taller than the national average... Are you like two meters tall?

Aww, well, thank you!

It'd definitely be a neat thing to see all done out!

Birch bark containers are so cool. There's a guy at our range that has a birch bark quiver, and it's much more supple and flexible than I thought it would be. It's pretty impressive! You'd have to fiddle a bit to make sure it's water-tight, but I'm sure it's been done
You can always weave your own baskets too! Making coil baskets is surprisingly easy (though time-consuming) and the native americans in my area would waterproof them by coating the interior with hot asphaltum, or pine pitch. I suppose beeswax would also work It'd smell considerably better than the asphaltum, for sure!

Oh, it's still a loong way off. I'm pretty tied up making the trad tournament trophies for my club, and then school's starting back up, so it'll probably have to wait til mid-December at the earliest, but more likely than not, probably until late june, or so, when I'm done with the last round of finals for the academic year. I have yet to contact the guys at the forge, but word of mouth has it, that he likes to trade for viking-styled things, so I'm thinking of brushing up on my leatherwork and whatnot, maybe in exchange for extra forge time
I definitely want to do it though.

Did you finish that knife you were working on the last time? Or have you started on something new?

seth-ravenclaw In reply to Arboris-Silvestre [2015-09-18 11:43:34 +0000 UTC]

i got a little better yush x3 but i won't shoot anymore until i have new arrows. i'm planning on buying a set of arrows at a dutch webshop o 3o but idk how long my arrows need to be or how you can measure arrows. if they measure the entire arrow including the butt and tip or just the butt till the tip starts.

barely xD i'm like 180 cm or 1,80 meters tall xD or at least as far as i know. i haven't measured myself since a long time o 3o

no problem at all ^^ imma continue the process when i finish this message xD

awesome! i really hope we have a few birch trees near us when we have the location of our community/village. then we can make alot out of birch bark~ it does sound a bit hard to remove the bark and not kill the tree tho o 3o
ah those are the baskets you make, right? xD i was thinking about making such baskets as well for a short while but trying to mae them out of pine needles. or atleast from needled trees xD but asphaltum is used in asphalt roads, right? o 3o or is it a completely different thing? xD i would rather use pine pitch then as beeswax is also pretty expensive AND valuable even with bees. thats something i also want to have o 3o bees. just for the honey and wax x3

trad? o 3o you mean traditional? you also use traditional bows and arrows then? o 3o ah, school, the good and bad thing =w= good for you as it can teach you how to do your job (sadly nothing else) and you have something to do and the bad thing its mostly boring xD but i see o 3o are you almost done with school? or do you still need a couple years? xD
sounds good x3 viking style stuff are always nice ^^ same for celtic styled stuff and germanic stuff ^^ i like those cultures x3 i even thought about becoming pagan o 3o and i'm still thinking about becoming one. its  quite interesting especially with the nordic mythology ^^
wait, you also do leatherwork? o 3o what things can you make? atm i can only get faux leather from jackets x ux and i'm afraid to send an email to a leather trader and ask if they can send it to me uwu i'm too shy...
then go for it xD

not yet xD it has been raining for a loooong time and today is the only day which is a little dry. but i don't trust it yet. i can't forge tomorrow either, then i am going to a birthday of a friend of mine ^^ and i'm not sure if its dry on sunday or monday. i do want to continue forging and make some tongs o 3o from the same metal (i'm not even sure if its steel or iron i'm making it out of) as the knife ^^ i do have a flat bar of steel besides thios round stock but i just have too much ideas which might even be too hard xD i'm even thinking about buying a small file and forging a firestarter out of it.

Sorry for the delay! I've been super busy

Ah. Any luck on arrows since we've last written? At least here, pre-assembled arrows come tip-to-tail at the length that you order, but as long as they're not too short, it generally isn't a big problem if they come out to be a little longer than what you want. People tend to add like half an inch just to be on the safe side (and it makes splicing your broken arrows a little more possible)

That'd definitely be a plus! I've seen a couple in yards and stuff here, but they don't seem to like the SoCal heat so much, and stay pretty small.
If they're big enough, you might be able to get bark from the branches and not have to worry about girdling the whole tree

Yep! You can make em out of all sorts of fibrous things, so it's not hard to use whatever resources you've got around you. I've always wanted to make a big one out of cattails, but just haven't gotten around to it...
Yeah, it's the naturally-occurring start of it. There are a few tar pits and places where it seeps up from the ground, in my general area and once the stuff has cooled, it's really hard, like stiff rubber or asphalt. It probably doesn't taste too good, but I've seen some neat containers in museums and displays that have stood the test of time
I've always seen pitch priced above beeswax, but yeah, I'd imagine it'd definitely last longer and stuff

Ooh... Then you can make your own home-brewed mead too...

Yeah The club has all sorts of styled tournaments, but my favorite is definitely with the traditional stuff.
Ha, right? I hope I'm almost done -it just depends on how soon I can get into some of the upper division classes that I need to take. I've still got organic chemistry and a couple of other more involved biology courses that I need after this. Hopefully no more than a couple of years worth... It's all mostly interesting, at least, haha.

Yeah, for sure! I have a friend who's pagan -I haven't really talked to her in-depth about her religious beliefs, because that's kind of weird, but I have been invited to her autumn celebration on Halloween, and I'm really excited about going over there for pumpkin soup and meeting interesting people of a wide variety of faiths and denominations. So it should be cool.

I dabble in lots of stuff, haha. I want to try everythinnnnggg....
I've made a quiver and a couple armguards, and a belt pouch, and at the moment, I've been sort of working on another quiver with a pocket.
Are there any thrift shops or second-hand stores in your area? One of my friends was able to get an old leather suitcase for super cheap, and cut it up, and turned it into a quiver for herself. Complete with straps and a pocket!
aww! I'm sure the worst they could do is ask for too much money, or just say no!

Oh wow... We're like hoping and praying for rain, haha. It's been super hot and dry. Care to mail some weather systems over? I'll trade ya for some oppressive and drying sunshine! Tongs and firestarters are also super useful! Also, spoons. I love spoons and scoops.
