SM is often thought to be just shyness amongst people who don't know of it. Do you find it hard to talk about your SM?

I rarely have talked about it, considering I just learned of SM a few months ago. I saw an article on yahoo news about it and thought, "why thats exactly what I have!" For years my parents thought I was extremely shy or had atleast inherited my great grandmother's anxiety disorder. Now I can show people why I'm like this.

I find it pretty scary how many people with sm go through their entire childhood without ever being diagnosed. I was diagnosed really young, and because of that got a little help. But I was pretty much mute with anyone outside of my family as a small kid. Were you ever like that?

Yeah, I could never speak with anyone that wasn't family or a close friend. There would be times when I would really want to say something and just couldnt get any words out. That still happens alot, but as I get older and get more responsibilities, I get more confident about speaking. I can even get out whole sentences if I'm not pressured.

That's great! How old are you now? I know that I got a lot better as I got older, though I had a few set-backs, but mostly now providing I'm comfortable I can speak okay. I'm 22 now, so it's taken a good long while and there are still times that I find it hard to speak.

Yeah, it seems to be getting easier, but slowly. I'm 16 now. My future career plan is pretty much based on face-to-face speaking, so I'm really hoping that it fades by my late 20's.

It is a pretty graduual thing...At 16 I was pretty bad, I'd just had a few..issues...with school, but otherwise I think that maybe I would have gotten better a little quicker. What do you want to do?
