# About me

Kaixo guztioi!

Paleontologian ikertzailea naiz. Nire ikerketak batez ere Proboszideotara eta tamainia korporalera zuzdenduta daude.

Bestalde, desagertutako animali ikusgarriak berreraikitzea gustoko dut, batez ere hugaztunak. Nire berregiteak ahal ditudan zehatzenak egiten ditut, benetako hezurren neurriak mm-etatik pixeletara pasaz (1 mm= 1 pixel).

------

Hello everbody!

I'm Paleontology researcher. My studies principally focuses on proboscideans and vertebrate body size.

Also, I love to restore extinct animals, specially mammals. I try to make them as accurate as possible. For my recreations, I translate the real bone dimensions from mm to pixels. (1 mm= 1 pixel)

Hello Assier. Just wondering, is there any chance that you'll make an asian elephant skeletal?

Hello!

I've already done it. You can check it in my scientific paper about proboscideans' body size here: www.app.pan.pl/article/item/ap…

I should upload it to DA also.

Best!

Which proboscideans had the widest bodies based off your volumetric analyses?

ForbiddenParadise64 [2017-04-19 10:00:35 +0000 UTC]

Hi. Using paint.net, I calculated a couple of overall heights, since your paper only includes shoulder heights at the moment, which isn't the highest point of the body with these animals. For the largest steppe mammoth specimen (with 4.5m SH), I got an overall height of 4.62m, and for the 5.2m P.namadicus, I got an overall height of 5.72m due to the domed head it has. Would you say these figures are remotely accurate?

Asier-Larramendi In reply to ForbiddenParadise64 [2017-04-19 13:51:54 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you nail them, though P. namadicus has elevated head in that position, in relax one it would be 5.37 m to the highest point of the head according to the reconstruction, which is approximate by now.

Я не встречал ни  одного убедительного, реалистичного рисунка  Палеолоксодонта namadicus . Скажите почему ? Нет хороших художников ?  Компьютерные версии  не в счёт , там нет искусства .

Sure there are, but probably they don't know the species or they are not interested on it yet.

Could you tell me what kind of environment Palaeoloxodon falconeri lived in on Sicily? I haven't found any information on that.

These elephants lived in warm climate and in a green landscaped with the following fauna: Crocidura esuae,Lutra trinacriae, Leithia cartei, Leithia melitensis,Maltamys gollcheri, bats associated with diversified herpetofauna and avifauna.

Was it more of a grassy lowland environment?

It was also grassy and hilly environment.

Hello there ^^. I was trying to do research on the giant Palaeoloxodon namadicus, but when I tried to find out it's temporal range, I couldn't find anything on Wikipedia. Could you tell me when and where it first appeared, and when it became extinct?

Hello,

The fossils of this species are dated from Middle to Late Pleistocene.

From what localities/regions exactly? Also, is it possible that it coexisted with a member of Hominini?

Can you tell me if the morphology of Stegodon florensis insularis was similar to that of Stegodon zdansky?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Asier-Larramendi In reply to Yutyrannus [2015-12-11 09:06:49 +0000 UTC]

It was for sure quite different.

A paper of mine and Maria Rita Palombo, will be published in short time, it talks about P. falconeri, it was very different from its mainland ancestor P. antiquus.

Dwarf forms suffered drastic allometric changes from its ancestors because of new biomechanical requirements and the square-cube law.

By the way, Stegodon sondarii was even smaller.

Yutyrannus In reply to Asier-Larramendi [2015-12-11 22:14:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have heard about the P. falconeri paper and I am very excited to read it, that was one weirdly proportioned elephant . In fact that was the reason I was asking about Stegodon florensis insularis, I was wondering if it too had similarly odd morphology.

I have heard about S. sondaari, I was just asking about S. florensis insularis because it lived at the right time for the episode of a project I am working on which features Homo floresiensis (oddly enough the only thing I've ever worked on that mainly focuses on a hominid species).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Asier-Larramendi In reply to Yutyrannus [2015-12-16 19:41:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, Stegodon florensis was quite large, around 2 meters tall and 2 tonnes in body mass, so the anatomical changes might not had been very strong.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yutyrannus In reply to Asier-Larramendi [2015-12-16 22:29:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I kind of figured they wouldn't be very strong.

Actually that reminds me, how much material of S. florensis insularis is known?
